Apple iPhone 3G

iPhone 3G Goes On Sale
The long-awaited iPhone 3G went on sale today, July 11th, to eager crowds who flooded Apple and AT&T retail stores in order to be among the first to get their hands on the new device. Though some critics have been quick to point out some of the features they feel are missing from the updated version of the iPhone, overall reviews have been very good. Tests of the iPhone 3G in the real world have reportedly been living up to the promises of speeds twice as fast as the original iPhone, and early reviews of the applications available for download from Apple's new iTunes App Store have been favorable as well. With the pounding the iTunes site is expected to take from iPhone and iPod Touch users, customers can expect to see connection problems, as well as downloading problems, in the early hours following the iPhone 3G's release, mostly from eager iPhone users wanting to fill up their new devices with the latest new iPhone apps, as well as from downloaders of the 2.0 software update for first generation iPhone users and iPod Touch users. Overall, though, Apple looks to have another hit on its hands with the iPhone 3G and the new Apps Store. About 500 applications were released yesterday in the new store, with more expected to follow soon.

NASA QuikScat Windmap

Could Ocean Wind Power Solve Energy Problems?
Using nearly a decade of data from NASA's QuikSCAT satellite, scientists have developed maps that reveal ocean areas where winds could produce wind energy, aiding in the planning of locations for offshore wind farms that would convert wind energy into electrical energy.

"Wind energy is environmentally friendly. After the initial energy investment to build and install wind turbines, you don't burn fossil fuels that emit carbon," said study lead author Tim Liu, a senior research scientist and QuikSCAT science team leader at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "Like solar power, wind energy is green energy."

Wind energy has the potential to provide 10 to 15 percent of future world energy requirements, according to Paul Dimotakis, chief technologist at JPL. According to Liu's research, if ocean areas with high winds were tapped for wind energy, they could potentially generate 500 to 800 watts of energy per square meter. Dimotakis notes that while this is slightly less than solar energy (which generates about one kilowatt of energy per square meter), wind power can be converted to electricity more efficiently than solar energy and at a lower cost per watt of electricity produced.

Microsoft-Yahoo!

Microsoft May Open Yahoo! Talks Again
Microsoft issued a statement today, stating that it may be willing to open talks with Yahoo! again, if a new board is elected.

"In the past week we have had the opportunity to discuss with Carl Icahn the prospects for a possible agreement between Microsoft and Yahoo!.

Despite working since January 31 of this year, as well as in the early part of last year, we have never been able to reach an agreement in a timely way on acceptable terms with the current management and Board of Directors at Yahoo!. We have concluded that we cannot reach an agreement with them. We confirm, however, that after the shareholder election Microsoft would be interested in discussing with a new board a major transaction with Yahoo!, such as either a transaction to purchase the “Search” function with large financial guarantees or, in the alternative, purchasing the whole company.

As Mr. Icahn notes in his statement today, it would be premature to discuss at this time important details such as the price or other terms of a possible transaction. We respect the right of Yahoo!’s shareholders to determine the destiny of their company, and we do not intend to engage in ongoing commentary on these issues in advance of Yahoo!’s shareholder meeting.

As we explained on June 12 when Yahoo! announced an agreement with Google, we believe that our proposed search acquisition and partnership would have delivered superior value to Yahoo!’s shareholders and the marketplace as a whole. We have not changed our position, even as we continue to move forward with our own online search and advertising offerings. We therefore welcome interest by Mr. Icahn in pursuing this and other discussions.

While of course there can be no assurance of a future transaction, we will be prepared to enter into discussions immediately after Yahoo!’s shareholder meeting if a new board is elected."

Ares I-X and Ares I Rockets

NASA Debuts Web Site for First Ares Test Flight
NASA is developing new spacecraft, the Ares rockets and Orion crew capsule, to deliver astronauts to the International Space Station and send them on their way to the moon. The first test flight of the spacecraft, known as Ares I-X, is scheduled to launch in spring 2009. The latest information about this launch is now available at: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/constellation/ares/flighttests/aresIx/index.html

The Web site was created to offer key information about the details and objectives of the Ares I-X test flight. The site features articles, images and videos that outline the objectives of the Ares I-X test flight and explain how these objectives will influence the design and flight of the Ares I rocket and Orion crew capsule.

The Ares I-X flight will test hardware, facilities and ground operations associated with the Ares I rocket. It also will provide critical data during ascent of the integrated Orion crew exploration vehicle and the Ares I launch vehicle stack -- data that will be used to design a vehicle system that is safe and fully operational before astronauts begin traveling into orbit.

The Ares I-X test flight will bring America one step closer to a return to the moon by 2020 and eventual trips to Mars and destinations beyond. For more information about NASA's exploration plans, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/constellation

The Lost Ones

Zune Arts Unveils Graphic Novel Written by Steve Niles
Zune Arts, today released “The Lost Ones,” a graphic novel written by Steve Niles, celebrated author of “30 Days of Night”. For the Zune-commissioned novel, Niles was paired up with visual artists Dr. Revolt, Gary Panter, Kime Buzzelli and Morning Breath to take the reader on an epic journey through time and space. Each artist illustrated a different chapter of the novel, resulting in a blend of artistic styles that is emblematic of the unique creative collaborations for which Zune Arts has become widely known.

A preview of the novel is currently available at zune-arts.net/lost. Two digital formats of the novel (PDF and RAR) are available free for download today, and visitors can watch the graphic novel trailer and previously released behind-the-scenes podcasts documenting the artists in action. In early July, 42,000 paperback editions of the novel will be available free at select comic book and retail boutiques nationwide. In addition, 1,250 signed limited-edition collector’s copies with silk-screened covers packaged with artwork from the novel will be produced for select distribution.

“Working with these four talented artists on this project was a delight,” Niles said. “Zune Arts was the gateway that allowed us to show what’s possible when artists of different backgrounds and unique styles collaborate to create something larger than the sum of its parts.”

“The Lost Ones” chronicles the adventures of four friends — Duncan, Roxy, Rasheed and Cynthia — whose seemingly harmless day of extreme planet jumping turns into a mind-blowing, white-knuckle race for their lives to get back home. They find that home is no longer where they left it and the alien race, hell-bent on destroying them, isn’t getting any friendlier.

“We are excited to bring together a collective of like-minded individuals who are innovators in the artistic community and come from a diverse set of backgrounds,” said Robert Schaltenbrand, brand manager for Zune at Microsoft. “The unique result of this collaboration is a genre-bending concept that transcends traditional graphic novels and delivers something new and exciting to readers and fans.”

Zune Arts will also be hosting several book signings throughout the United States during the summer. For more information, visit Zune Arts at www.zune-arts.net.
