Microsoft Issues Statement Regarding the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Ruling in the i4i Case
Microsoft Director of Public Affairs, Kevin Kutz, issued a statement addressing the denial of Microsoft's appeal by the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, regarding the i4i case, which pertains to the injunction set against Microsoft regarding the sale of copies of Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft Office 2007 sold in the U.S. on or after January 11, 2010. The statement read:
We have just learned that the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has denied our appeal in the i4i case. We are moving quickly to comply with the injunction, which takes effect on January 11, 2010.
This injunction applies only to copies of Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft Office 2007 sold in the U.S. on or after the injunction date of January 11, 2010. Copies of these products sold before this date are not affected.
With respect to Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft Office 2007, we have been preparing for this possibility since the District Court issued its injunction in August 2009 and have put the wheels in motion to remove this little-used feature from these products. Therefore, we expect to have copies of Microsoft Word 2007 and Office 2007, with this feature removed, available for U.S. sale and distribution by the injunction date. In addition, the beta versions of Microsoft Word 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010, which are available now for downloading, do not contain the technology covered by the injunction.
While we are moving quickly to address the injunction issue, we are also considering our legal options, which could include a request for a rehearing by the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals en banc or a request for a writ of certiorari from the U.S. Supreme Court.

LG to Launch New Line of 3D TVs in 2010
LG is reportedly planning to debut a new line of 3D televisions next year, hoping to beat its competitors to the punch in a market that is predicted to expand once a sufficient number of 3D sets have been sold. While emerging 3D technologies offer new possibilities as to how various types of content will be viewed in the future, currently there is little 3D content for users to take advantage of existing sets on the market. That, along with high price tags on 3D sets as comapred to their 2D counterparts, will no doubt be a hurdle television manufacturers will need to overcome to make 3D viewing mainstream in homes around the world. Hopefully, competition in the 3D marketplace will drive prices down enough to make producing 3D content an attractive option for content producers as well. Stay tuned...

Top Publishers Team Up with New Electronic Publishing Technology
Publishers News Corp, Time Inc., Conde Nast, Hearst, and Meredith are reportedly planning a new electronic print technology that will use color, and be able to display on a number of different devices. The group also plans to have a new electronic publication storefront, for consumers to be able to purchase various publications. Unlike many current electronic readers, which display text and images in gray tones, the new color technology the group has planned would allow publications to appear more like their print counterparts, letting customers view images and layouts closer to the way they were intended to be viewed. The new venture, if successful, will also help publishers, who continue to struggle with the problem of steady losses, earn additional revenue by creating new advertising markets, as well as new outlets for their publications to be purchased from.

AT&T and Verizon end "There's a Map for That" Legal War
AT&T and Verizon have reportedly agreed to drop their lawsuits against each other for now, putting an end to the legal war that began when Verizon began airing their "There's a Map for That" commercials, which depicted AT&T as having inferior 3G coverage across the United States. Lockheed Martin-Microsoft Agreement to Bring Better Training to Warfighters
Lockheed Martin and Microsoft have entered into an intellectual property (IP) licensing agreement that allows Lockheed Martin to further develop the Microsoft ESP PC-based visual simulation software platform to better train warfighters for battle. Microsoft ESP technology allows users to operate realistic vehicle models that incorporate real-world physics to enhance realism, such as in the interior and instrumentation panel of an aircraft.
The agreement provides Lockheed Martin with access to the ESP technology portfolio enabling the company to build cost-effective simulation solutions for customized training for its worldwide customers. Lockheed Martin’s software development teams will extend the current capabilities of ESP to enable a whole new suite of innovative ESP-based solutions that will evolve beyond flight training to include ground and civil agency applications.
“The training needs of our military and civil government customers continue to expand,” said Chester Kennedy, vice president of Engineering at Lockheed Martin’s Simulation, Training & Support business unit. “Seeking out and developing new innovative solutions such as this one based on the proven Microsoft ESP technology allows Lockheed Martin to provide our customers with new and tailored training systems more quickly and cost efficiently.”
“Solutions built on Microsoft ESP can engage users in immersive experiences with very realistic environments, making them ideal tools for training, evaluating and preparing personnel for optimal performance in the real world,” said Chris Cortez, general manager of Strategic Programs at Microsoft and a retired Marine Corps major general. “ESP models the entire world and will allow Lockheed Martin’s developers to easily add their own content, objects, scenery, simulation functionality and scenarios to create custom training solutions.”
The Microsoft ESP IP licensing agreement builds on the existing Microsoft/Lockheed Martin Strategic Alliance to bring meaningful information technology services and products to market and continue to fuel innovation. It is also an example of Microsoft’s broader efforts to collaborate with industry through IP licensing.
Visitors to the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation & Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in Orlando this week can see Lockheed Martin’s first ESP-based solution on display in booth 2049. New Virus Attacks Jailbroken iPhones
A new virus is reportedly attacking jailbroken iPhones. Hackers are attempting to use the virus to obtain banking information from thousands of phones whose users have chosen to jailbreak their devices, subsequently exposing their iPhones to security risks that would otherwise pose no threat. iPhones that have been jailbroken, and are no longer using the standard security features put in place by Apple, are at risk of having their device taken over by the virus by way of the phone's internet connections. Once taken over, hackers can use the virus to collect private information. Hackers are reportedly using the virus to direct users to fake banking sites, hoping to obtain banking password and other account information. iPhones that have not been jailbroken, however, are not affected by the virus. As always, whether your phone is jailbroken or not, it is still good practice to be aware of sites you are visiting and e-mail that you receive, in order to avoid exposing your personal information o attacks such as these.

NASA's Centennial Challenges program awarded $350,000 this week to a pair of designers who developed concepts for more flexible space gloves that could make it easier for astronauts to perform tasks.
The 2009 Astronaut Glove Challenge awarded a first place prize of $250,000 to Peter Homer of Southwest Harbor, Maine, and a second place prize of $100,000 to Ted Southern of Brooklyn, N.Y. In this challenge, competitors demonstrated their glove design by performing a range of tasks with the glove in a pressurized chamber.
"It is remarkable that two designers working on their own could create gloves that meet the requirements for spaceflight -- a task that normally requires a large team of experts," said Kate Mitchell, an engineer at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

NASA's LCROSS Impacts Confirm Water in Lunar Crater
Preliminary data from NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS, indicates the mission successfully uncovered water in a permanently shadowed lunar crater.
The LCROSS spacecraft and a companion rocket stage made twin impacts in the Cabeus crater Oct. 9 that created a plume of material from the bottom of a crater that has not seen sunlight in billions of years. The plume traveled at a high angle beyond the rim of Cabeus and into sunlight, while an additional curtain of debris was ejected more laterally.
"We're unlocking the mysteries of our nearest neighbor and, by extension, the solar system," said Michael Wargo, chief lunar scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "The moon harbors many secrets, and LCROSS has added a new layer to our understanding."
Since the impacts, the LCROSS science team has been analyzing the huge amount of data the spacecraft collected. The team concentrated on data from the satellite's spectrometers, which provide the most definitive information about the presence of water.
"We are ecstatic," said Anthony Colaprete, LCROSS project scientist and principal investigator at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "Multiple lines of evidence show water was present in both the high angle vapor plume and the ejecta curtain created by the LCROSS Centaur impact. The concentration and distribution of water and other substances requires further analysis, but it is safe to say Cabeus holds water."
Data from the other LCROSS instruments are being analyzed for additional clues about the state and distribution of the material at the impact site. The LCROSS science team and colleagues are poring over the data to understand the entire impact event, from flash to crater. The goal is to understand the distribution of all materials within the soil at the impact site.
"The full understanding of the LCROSS data may take some time. The data is that rich," Colaprete said. "Along with the water in Cabeus, there are hints of other intriguing substances. The permanently shadowed regions of the moon are truly cold traps, collecting and preserving material over billions of years."

"Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network's video delivery service, or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all."
"As instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix becomes an increasingly popular way to enjoy the Netflix service, our goal is to rapidly expand the devices that stream to our members," said Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings. "As a leading game console and Blu-ray disc player, bringing Netflix to the PS3 system is a real win for both Netflix members and PS3 system owners."
Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray's BD-Live™ technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Netflix members simply slide the disc into their PS3 systems to reveal movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly. Members can use the Netflix Web site or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their Queues. With the PS3 system's Wireless Controller, members can choose a movie to watch from their instant Queues or just play directly from any of the lists. They also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream via the Wireless Controller.
Netflix members and PS3 system owners can now reserve a free instant streaming disc for PS3 systems by going to www.netflix.com/ps3. Upon availability, the instant streaming disc will be delivered for free by first-class mail, generally one business day after members request it.

Apple introduced the new wireless Magic Mouse, the first mouse to use Apple’s Multi-Touch technology. Pioneered on iPhone, iPod touch and Mac notebook trackpads, Multi-Touch allows customers to navigate using intuitive finger gestures. Instead of mechanical buttons, scroll wheels or scroll balls, the entire top of the Magic Mouse is a Multi-Touch surface. Adobe Founders Receive U.S. Government’s National Medal of Technology and Innovation
Adobe Systems founders, John E. Warnock, Ph.D., and Charles M. Geschke, Ph.D., received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation today. President Barack Obama presented the award at a ceremony in the White House East Room. The award – the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on scientists, engineers and inventors – recognizes outstanding technology contributions for the improvement of the economic, environmental or social well-being of the United States.
Warnock and Geschke’s initial innovation, a printer language called Adobe PostScript, sparked a quiet revolution that democratized publishing and today is seen as an important first step in the mass dissemination of ideas and information.
Building on the success of PostScript, Warnock and Geschke launched the Portable Document Format (PDF) in 1993. PDF is now used by government organizations, corporations and people around the world for universal, reliable document exchange. The company has distributed over half of a billion copies of the virtually ubiquitous Adobe Reader software for interacting with PDF files.
“All of us at Adobe are proud of John and Chuck’s remarkable achievements,” said Shantanu Narayen, president and CEO of Adobe. “Our success and continuous innovation are a testament to their original vision and the company values they instilled from the very beginning.”

Microsoft Launches Online H1N1 Flu Response Center to Support Consumers
Microsoft today announced a new Web site, H1N1 Response Center - www.h1n1responsecenter.com, which provides users with timely and relevant content and enables consumers to gauge symptoms and receive guidance using an H1N1 self-assessment service.
“If current estimates are correct, many emergency departments across the nation could be overwhelmed by two groups of patients — those who have H1N1 and those who believe they have H1N1,” said Angela Gardner, M.D., FACEP, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians. “It is going to be essential that we use every tool and service at our disposal to contain this illness, and online H1N1 self-assessment tools, such as the one offered by Microsoft, can be helpful in providing people with ways to determine whether they should seek emergency care.”
Designed to help people decide what to do if they are worried that they or someone they know might have H1N1, the site offers consumers a self-assessment licensed from medical and public health experts at Emory University. The service assists people in deciding whether their symptoms could be caused by the H1N1 flu virus and provides guidance on what they can do next.
“It is already clear that certain people are more vulnerable to the effects of H1N1 flu virus than others,” said Dr. Arthur Kellermann, professor of emergency medicine and an associate dean of the Emory School of Medicine. “By providing an at-home tool that can help users evaluate whether they need to see a provider before they head to the hospital, we can encourage those who are severely ill or at risk for serious illness to contact their doctor, and reassure everyone else that it is safe and prudent to recover at home. This will reduce the number of people needlessly exposed to H1N1 influenza in crowded clinic and ER waiting rooms, and allow doctors and nurses to focus their attention on those who need them most.”

After the incident, Amazon publicly apologized for what took place, and later offered customers a new digital version of the book to download or a $30 gift certificate to buy whatever they pleased on the site. The lawsuit was reportedly settled for $150,000 with Amazon agreeing to not delete items from a customer's Kindle in the future unless the customer agrees to it, requests a refund, or the item contains harmful embedded code that would affect the operation of the customer's Kindle.

Microsoft Offers Free Tool to Fight Malware
Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft’s new free, core anti-malware service that helps protect consumers against viruses, spyware and other malicious software, will be available September 29th. Microsoft Security Essentials, independently certified by West Coast Labs, is backed by the company’s global security response team and is built on the same core security technology found in the company’s security solutions for businesses. It requires no registration, trials or renewals and will be available for download directly from Microsoft at www.microsoft.com/security_essentials.
“Consumers have told us that they want the protection of real-time security software but we know that too many are either unwilling or unable to pay for it, and so end up unprotected,” said Amy Barzdukas, general manager for consumer security at Microsoft. “With Microsoft Security Essentials, consumers can get high-quality protection that is easy to get and easy to use — and it won’t get in their way.”
By making Microsoft Security Essentials easy to get and easy to use, Microsoft hopes to encourage broader adoption of anti-virus protection across the consumer audience, which in turn will help increase security across the entire Windows ecosystem. For business customers, Microsoft will continue to offer Forefront Client Security, providing centralized, comprehensive management and reporting capabilities.
Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to run quietly in the background alerting users only when there is an action for them to take. It also limits CPU and memory usage, resulting in less impact on the tasks consumers perform every day, even on older or less powerful PCs. Microsoft Security Essentials uses real-time protection to help prevent PCs from becoming infected, and it is the first Microsoft security product to make use of the company’s new Dynamic Signature Service, a technology that helps ensure users stay protected by the most current virus definitions available without having to wait for the next scheduled download.
“Microsoft is focused on the challenges that prevent consumers from running up-to-date anti-virus software today, particularly in emerging markets where there is a growing prevalence of malware,” said Jon Crotty, security analyst at IDC. “With Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft is helping to reduce some of the barriers that constrain consumers from running AV.”
Microsoft Security Essentials will be available in eight languages and 19 countries for Windows XP SP2 or SP3, Windows Vista and Windows 7 including Windows XP mode on both x32 and x64 PCs. For more information, visit: www.microsoft.com/security_essentials

EU to Set Volume Limits on MP3 Players

Health warnings will also accompany the palyers, to let consumers know the risks they face regarding hearing loss if they choose to raise the volume higher than the player's default level.

AT&T Brings MMS Messaging to the iPhone
After much disappointment from U.S. iPhone customers, who were none too happy over the delays, AT&T has made MMS messaging available for the iPhone. While iPhone users in other countries had the feature made available to them soon after it was announced by Apple, with the release of the iPhone 3GS, U.S. iPhone customers were made to wait until now to get the same functionality in their phones. The delay brought harsh criticism to AT&T, adding to the already unkind words many iPhone customers have had for the company, due to problems with service in high-traffic areas, and numerous reports of some mobile applications reportedly having to disable some of their features for the iPhone while those same features are allowed to be fully functional on other mobile devices. With the addition of the MMS features, hopefully AT&T will activate the tethering features soon as well. To use the new MMS features, iPhone users need to update their phones via Apple's iTunes software.

Price Cut Sparks Jump in Sony PS3 Sales
Sony's sales of it's PS3 gaming console have reportedly jumped significantly since the company's introduction of the new PS3 Slim and the announcement that the console would now sell for $100 less than its previous model. Though sales of the PS3 have historically lagged behind the Microsoft's Xbox and the Nintendo's Wii, it looks like Sony has finally caught the break it has been looking for, so much so that some are beginning to wonder if stores will be seeing product shortages due to the increased demand.

Netflix Awards $1 Million Netflix Prize
After almost three years and submissions by more than 40,000 teams from 186 countries, Netflix, the world's largest online movie rental service, today awarded the $1 million Netflix Prize to a team of engineers, statisticians and researchers who achieved the competition's goal of a 10 percent improvement over the accuracy of the Netflix movie recommendation system when the competition was launched in October 2006.
The team "BellKor's Pragmatic Chaos," the merging of three teams that had previously competed against one another in the contest, received the $1 million Netflix Prize in an award ceremony hosted by Netflix Co-Founder and CEO Reed Hastings and Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt.
"We had a bona fide race right to the very end," said Mr. Hastings. "Teams that had previously battled it out independently joined forces to surpass the 10 percent barrier. New submissions arrived fast and furious in the closing hours and the competition had more twists and turns than 'The Crying Game,' 'The Usual Suspects' and all the 'Bourne' movies wrapped into one."
The winning team is comprised of software and electrical engineers, statisticians and machine learning researchers from Austria, Canada, Israel and the United States. All seven team members - Bob Bell, Martin Chabbert, Michael Jahrer, Yehuda Koren, Martin Piotte, Andreas Toscher and Chris Volinsky - attended the awards ceremony. It was the first time all seven had met one another in person. How the $1 million is split is to be determined by the team.
Netflix said "BellKor's Pragmatic Chaos" edged out a team called "The Ensemble," another collaboration of former competitors, with the winning submission coming just 24 minutes before the conclusion of the nearly three-year-long contest. The competition was so close and the submissions so sophisticated that it took a team of external and internal judges several weeks to validate the winner after the contest closed on July 26th. The Netflix Prize external judges are University of California, San Diego Professor Charles Elkan and University of California, Irvine Professor Padhraic Smyth. The internal judges are Netflix senior engineers Stanley Lanning and Jon Sanders.
"Accurately predicting the movies Netflix members will love is a key component of our service," said Dr. Hunt. "This extreme level of personalization is like entering a video store with 100,000 titles and having those that are most interesting to you fly off the shelves and line up in front of you. We take the guess work out of renting by presenting the movies and TV episodes we believe each Netflix member will most enjoy," he added.

TomTom iPhone App Releases to Mixed Reviews
TomTom's eagerly awaited navigation app has been released to the iTunes App Store, but many customers have already sounded off about features that are lacking, as well as the app's high price. At $99.99, customers have complained that the current version of the app doesn't feature spoken street names, alerts as to whether your destination is on the left or right, has no custom voices, and has maps that at times feel somewhat out of date. Whether an app update will fix these problems in the near future is anyone's guess, but on the plus side, reviews have stated that other than a few issues, including the ones mentioned above, overall the app seems to work. At $99.99, however, shouldn't TomTom have made sure that the iPhone app lived up to the high quality of its other products right out of the gate? We think they should have, as well as making their iPhone car kit available with the launch of the app. For those who are willing to wait for the missing features to be added in by a future update, or those who prefer to have their GPS unit integrated into the phone they already carry with them rather than carrying a second device, the TomTom app may still be worth a look. With other popular navigation apps, like NAVIGON AG's MobileNavigator, already becoming popular with iPhone users at a cheaper price, TomTom will no doubt have to address the concerns of its customers, and provide the expected features TomTom lovers have become accustomed to if they want to fend off their competitors.

iPhone 3G S Debuts
The new iPhone 3G S went on sale today. Lines in many cities around the world weren't as long as in previous years, but reports have indicated that there have been many pre-order sellouts in just about every store carrying the new phone that allowed customers to order a new iPhone before the 3G S's launch. AT&T also made many angry customers happy when they eased back on their strict early upgrade policies, to allow customers who are within a few months of being eligible for the less expensive upgrade pricing to receive the lower $199 and $299 prices they had been denied before. The new iPhone is getting favorable reviews from users across the board, who notice the faster speeds when using standard features and applications, and give high marks to the many new features previous versions of the iPhone were missing, including voice control, video recording, and upgraded camera with auto features, and better battery life. The iPhone 3G S is available for $199 for a 16GB model, and $299 for a 32GB model from Apple's online retail store, AT&T stores, Wal Mart, and Best Buy.

Apple Launches iPhone 3.0 Software Update Minus Past Headaches
Apple launched its iPhone 3.0 software update today, minus the problems experienced when the 2.0 update debuted along with the iPhone 3G. This time around, Apple spaced the debut of the 3.0 software and the launch of the new iPhone 3G S a couple of days apart, making it less likely that they would have a repeat of the bricked phones many users found themselves with last year when trying to update their phone's OS or activate their new iPhone 3G. No doubt Apple learned a thing or two from that debacle, and this time around users were able to upgrade to the new OS with very few problems at all. Though there were some times when servers were busy, most users were able to get their updates quickly, and reviews of the new OS are generally favorable. Many new features have been added to old and new iPhones alike, and more are expected to come when AT&T makes MMS available later this summer with computer tethering hopefully soon to follow. The new iPhone 3.0 software update is free for iPhone owners, and $9.95 for iPod touch users.

Also announced, beginning today, the iPhone 3G is available for just $99 for the 8GB model.
“iPhone 3G S is the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet and we think people will love the incredible new features including autofocus camera, video recording and the freedom of voice control,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of WorldWide Product Marketing. “And with a breakthrough price of $99, we are thrilled to get iPhone 3G into the hands of even more users who want them.”

Skype Debuts for Apple iPhone/iPod touch
Skype announced that its highly anticipated application, Skype for iPhone, will be available for free in the Apple App Store beginning today. The app also adds Skype calling and instant messaging to any second generation iPod touch with a compatible headset and microphone.
"Skype software for the iPhone has been the number one request among our users. We are delighted to deliver on this request and put Skype into the pockets of millions of people around the world who are carrying iPhone and iPod touch devices," said Scott Durchslag, Skype's Chief Operating Officer. "Skype for iPhone will open up new ways for more than 400 million Skype users to stay connected and take their Skype conversations with them. Skype for iPhone is an experience that offers the same simplicity, ease-of-use and quality our users have come to expect from Skype, combined with an elegance of design and richness so loved by Apple's many customers worldwide."
Skype for iPhone requires a Wi-Fi connection to make free Skype-to-Skype calls or low-cost Skype calls to mobiles and landlines. Users will not be charged by Skype for making and receiving Skype-to-Skype calls using an iPhone or iPod touch. Skype's normal low rates apply if using Skype to call landlines or mobiles.
The app uses Wi-Fi, 3G, GPRS or EDGE (whichever is available) to sign into Skype, update a contact list, maintain and update presence and send/receive instant messages. Skype recommends an unlimited data usage plan for using Skype over a mobile data connection to avoid being charged by a wireless service provider for 3G, GPRS and EDGE mobile data usage.
Profile pictures of other users in a Skype Contacts list are also visible, making it easy to identify them. In addition, users can update their own Skype profile picture from within the Skype for iPhone app, either by choosing an existing image from a photo album on the device, or by using the camera on the iPhone to take a new photo.

The iPhone OS 3.0 beta release will also include a new Voice Memo app and expanded search capability for all key iPhone apps, as well as Spotlight search across the iPhone or iPod touch.
“The new iPhone OS 3.0 is a major software release packed with incredible new features and innovations for iPhone customers and developers alike. It will keep us years ahead of the competition,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
The iPhone OS 3.0 beta software and SDK include over 1,000 new APIs and are available today for all iPhone Developer Program members to use for development and testing of their apps for iPhone and iPod touch. Included in these APIs is the ability to leverage the incredible purchase model of the App Store within apps. In-App Purchases will allow developers to offer subscription content and provide the ability to sell new content and features in a simple and secure process. Developers can also more easily create peer-to-peer games for iPhone and iPod touch by using Bluetooth.
Another key developer feature in the iPhone OS 3.0 beta software is the ability for apps to interface with hardware accessories, creating a whole new element of control for iPhone and iPod touch accessory developers as well as a new ecosystem of solutions for customers. Developers will also be able to use Apple’s new Maps API to integrate Google Mobile Maps services within their apps which will offer Google Map tiles, current location, custom annotations and geocoding. The iPhone OS 3.0 beta software includes the Apple Push Notification service which provides developers with a mechanism to alert users with sounds, text or a badge.
The new iPhone OS 3.0 software will be available to iPhone and iPod touch users this summer with over 100 new features including cut, copy and paste which can be done within or across applications; MMS to send and receive photos, contacts, audio files and locations with the Messages app; and the ability to capture and send audio recordings on the go with the new Voice Memo app. Landscape view will be available for Mail, Text and Notes. Search capabilities will be expanded, allowing customers to search within Mail, iPod and Notes or search across all key apps by typing a key word or phrase into the new Spotlight search, conveniently accessed from the Home screen.
The updated Stock app will add the ability to display recent company news and current trading information like opening or average price, trading volume or Market Cap, and will offer a landscape view to see a full screen of any stock chart. Customers will also be able to view shared calendars right on their iPhone with CalDAV support and sync their calendars with iCal, Yahoo, Google and Oracle.
Today, the App Store has more than 25,000 applications available to consumers, and 15 more countries have been added so the App Store is now available in 77 countries, allowing developers to reach more than 30 million iPhone and iPod touch users around the world. Developers set the price for their applications and retain 70 percent of all sales revenue. Apple covers all credit card, web hosting and infrastructure costs associated with offering applications on the App Store.

Apple Debuts New iPod Shuffle
Apple introduced the new iPod shuffle, nearly half of the size of the previous model, and the first music player that talks to you. The new VoiceOver feature enables iPod shuffle to speak your song titles, artists and playlist names. The third generation iPod shuffle is smaller than a AA battery, holds up to 1,000 songs and is easier to use with all of the controls located on the earphone cord. Amazon Altering Text-to-Speech Feature of Kindle 2
Amazon.com has stated that the text-to-speech feature on the new Kindle 2 e-Reader will be modified so that a book's rightsholders can decide whether or not to allow the device to utilize the text-to-speech function while a user is reading their particular book.
"Kindle 2's experimental text-to-speech feature is legal: no copy is made, no derivative work is created, and no performance is being given. Furthermore, we ourselves are a major participant in the professionally narrated audiobooks business through our subsidiaries Audible and Brilliance. We believe text-to-speech will introduce new customers to the convenience of listening to books and thereby grow the professionally narrated audiobooks business," Amazon stated.
"Nevertheless, we strongly believe many rightsholders will be more comfortable with the text-to-speech feature if they are in the driver's seat.
Therefore, we are modifying our systems so that rightsholders can decide on a title by title basis whether they want text-to-speech enabled or disabled for any particular title. We have already begun to work on the technical changes required to give authors and publishers that choice. With this new level of control, publishers and authors will be able to decide for themselves whether it is in their commercial interests to leave text-to-speech enabled. We believe many will decide that it is.
Customers tell us that with Kindle, they read more, and buy more books. We are passionate about bringing the benefits of modern technology to long-form reading."

Amazon's Kindle 2 Looks Like Early Success
Amazon's Kindle 2 began shipping one day earlier than expected this week, much to the delight of eager buyers waiting for their new devices to be delivered. In a television interview on NBC's Today show earlier this week, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, while not quoting any exact figures, stated that the new Kindle is selling better than they had hoped for. While many original Kindle owners have decided to hold off on upgrading to the new and improved model, many others have been selling off their original Kindle devices, and paying the $359.00 again to purchase the new Kindle 2. Aside from existing customers upgrading, Amazon already had a waiting list of new customers from the end of last year, who have been patiently waiting for new supplies of the device to come in, so their orders could be filled. On top of that, with all of the publicity surrounding the device, Amazon is seeing further interest in the new Kindle 2, which could easily explain its better than expected numbers. So, what does it all mean for Amazon? For now, it looks like the Kindle 2 is shaping up to be a success for Amazon, whose business continues to soar in spite of the current economic downturn. If those numbers continue to grow, the Kindle 2 could be the first big electronic hit of the new year.

Facebook Changes Policy After User Uproar

The company has since stated that they have reverted back to their old terms of service policy, due to the concerns of its users.

Television Stations Switch to Digital Signals
Roughly one quarter of U.S. TV stations have reportedly cut off their analog broadcast signals, despite the mandatory switch to digital TV being delayed until June 12th. Under the terms of the revised cutoff date, stations were given the choice of waiting for June 12th to make the switch, or making the switch before that if they chose to do so. As expected, with stations having prepared for the original cutoff date of February 17th, many of them chose to stick to their original plans, and begin broadcasting strictly in digital. Those who were unprepared, after having been reminded for so long that the cutoff date was coming, found that their TV sets were unable to receive certain stations as of today. Though some are angry that they are feeling the results of the switch because they weren't prepared, others feel that everyone had more than enough time and notice to be ready for the original cutoff date, as well as fair warning again that even though the date had been delayed, stations could make the switch on the 17th as originally planned. Time to get those converter boxes hooked up!

Congress Approves Delay of Switch to Digital TV. Will Confusion Follow?
The switch to digital television will be delayed until June, after legislation cleared Congress on Wednesday. The bill delaying the switch to June 12th from February 17th, although cleared, leaves the option for television stations to stop broadcasting their analog television signals earlier if they choose. What effect the fact of no longer having a uniform cutoff date will have on those who are still not ready for the switch to digital television remains to be seen, but it is still recommended for viewers to be prepared on February 17th, just to be safe.

Senate Passes Bill to Delay Switch to Digital TV
On Monday, the Senate passed a bill that would delay the February 17th nationwide switch to digital TV, setting the new date for the switch to June 12th. Worries that millions are still not prepared for the switch to digital TV prompted the bill, but others are concerned that the delay will confuse television viewers, and add extra costs to stations already prepared to make the switch. Broadcasters, however, will be given the option to make the switch sooner than June 12th if they choose, and the House is expected to vote on the issue as soon as Wednesday.

NASA Debuts Global Hawk Autonomous Aircraft for Earth Science
NASA and the Northrop Grumman Corp. of Los Angeles have unveiled the first Global Hawk aircraft system to be used for environmental science research, heralding a new application for the world's first fully autonomous high-altitude, long-endurance aircraft. The debut took place Thursday at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center in Edwards, Calif.
NASA and Northrop Grumman are returning NASA's two Global Hawk aircraft to flight this year under a Space Act Agreement signed in May 2008. NASA plans to use the aircraft for missions to support its Science Mission Directorate and the Earth science community that require high-altitude, long-distance airborne capability.
"Today marks the debut of NASA's newest airborne science capability," said Kevin L. Petersen, director of Dryden. "These Global Hawks represent the first non-military use of this remarkable robotic aircraft system. NASA's partnership with Northrop Grumman has made this possible."
The U.S. Air Force transferred the Global Hawks to NASA in December 2007. They are among the first seven built in the original Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration program, which the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency sponsored. Northrop Grumman will share in the use of the aircraft to conduct its own flight demonstrations for expanded markets, missions and airborne capabilities, including integration of autonomous aircraft systems into the national airspace.
Global Hawk can fly at altitudes up to 65,000 feet for more than 31 hours at a time. To date, the aircraft have flown more than 28,000 hours.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, also is partnering with NASA to develop this new airborne research tool. NOAA is participating in the project management and piloting of the NASA Global Hawks and the development of scientific instruments and future Earth science research campaigns.
"The Global Hawks will provide superb new measurement possibilities for our climate science and applications programs," said Michael Freilich, director of NASA's Earth Science Division in Washington. "This collaboration is a model for NASA's wide-ranging Earth-observation activities to advance our understanding of Earth as an integrated system, which are critical to developing responses to environmental change here and around the world."
NASA's initial use of the aircraft to support Earth science will be the Global Hawk Pacific 2009 program. This campaign will consist of six long-duration missions over the Pacific and Arctic regions in the late spring and early summer of 2009. Twelve scientific instruments integrated into one of the NASA Global Hawk aircraft will collect atmospheric data while flying high through Earth's atmosphere in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere.
Global Hawk has many potential applications for the advancement of science, improvement of hurricane monitoring techniques, development of disaster support capabilities, and development of advanced autonomous aircraft system technologies. For example, Global Hawks were used to help monitor wildfires in Southern California in 2007 and 2008.
NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, located on Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert of Southern California, is NASA's primary installation for atmospheric flight research. It has supported NASA's technology development efforts in aeronautics, environmental science, space exploration and space operations for more than 60 years.

Apple debuted the new 17-inch model MacBook Pro at Macworld 2009, tapping Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, Philip Schiller, to give the final Macworld keyonote for the company, after stating its intentions to no longer attend the Expo in the future.
The 17-inch MacBook Pro features a non-removable battery that lasts up to 8 hours, a high-resolution LED-backlit LCD display, and NVIDIA GeForce graphics, for superior graphics performance. The new laptop also sports the same solid-body aluminum casing as the 15-inch version, glass trackpad, and offers a matte finish display, for those who prefer it over the 15-inch's glossy screen.
Other announcements included the updates of the iLife and iWork software products, the ability to download music on an iPhone over 3G, the price of songs now set at $0.69 and $0.99 (with and additional tier at $1.29), and the iTunes music catalog of 10 million songs all becoming DRM-free by the end of the quarter.
