Apple Closes Lala. iTunes on the Web Expected.
Lala will be shutting down its service on May 31st, and is no longer accepting new users. After Apple's purchase of the company, many have been wondering if Apple had plans of a Web-based version of iTunes. With Lala's closing, the possibility seems likely. The timing of the closing also lends itself to speculation, as the service would be ending before Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference in June, where the company typically announces new products and new features of existing products. Could we be seeing a Web-based version of iTunes before the year is out? Stay tuned...

HP Cancels Slate Tablet
HP is reportedly cancelling its Slate tablet computer, leaving many wondering if the move could have anything to do with its recent purchase of Palm, Inc. Could HP be planning on developing Palm's webOS for use in a future tablet product, instead of relying on Windows 7 as the device's OS? With the success of the iPad and the iPhone OS being used on the device instead of OS X, tablet manufacturers may be looking at alternate operating systems to run on their devices as well. Instead of full Windows 7 installs being run, we could easily begin to see Android, some form of Palm's webOS, and possibly even Windows Phone 7 operating systems powering future tablets. Stay tuned...

HP to Buy Palm for $1.2 Billion
Hewlett-Packard (HP) has agreed to buy Palm, Inc. for $1.2 billion. The sale of Palm comes as no surpise, as many have seen the company's continued struggle to compete in a smartphone marketplace dominated by Apple's iPhone and numerous Android OS offerings from other phone manufacturers. Though Palm's Pre smartphone received favorable reviews from most when it debuted a year ago, the Pre never really caught on with consumers. The Pre's lack of a suitable amount of apps, and Palm's late delivery of its webOS SDK to developers already had many predicting its downfall.
The buy could be a great boon to HP, if handled correctly. With ownership of Palm's webOS, HP could develop a new line of smartphones that would allow it to enter the marketplace along with competitors such as Dell, who are preparing for the release of their own new line of phones. Other mobile devices could also benefit from the purchase, as tablet PC manufacturers look to the possibility of using smartphone operating systems for their new devices, instead of full versions of operating systems, a strategy that has so far been working well for Apple and its iPad line of tablet computers. With HP's upcoming Slate expected to run a full version of Windows 7, it's not too much of a stretch to consider the possibility of a less expensive line of HP tablets that would run on a version of the webOS being brought into the mix as well. With the iPad already looking to dominate the emerging tablet market, companies will have to embrace new ideas to make their products stand out and be more competitive. HP seems to be doing just that, and it should be interesting to see just what this new purchase means for future products from the company

Verizon Community Recycling Events Keep More Than 21,000 Pounds of E-Waste Out of Landfills
Verizon announced that more than 21,000 pounds of electronics have been collected at two Verizon locations in New Jersey and Virginia to help the company's employees and surrounding communities keep discarded computers, stereo equipment, space heaters and other e-waste out of landfills. The recycling events have helped the company collect more than 40,000 pounds of e-waste.
"Small steps taken by many people can have a tremendously positive impact on the environment," said James Gowen, Verizon's chief sustainability officer. "Our goal is to have Verizon's 217,000 employees lead more sustainable lives at work and at home. And, through the use of our high-speed broadband networks and events such as this recycling day, help our customers and communities reduce their environmental impact."

NASA Selects Community College Scholars For Chance To Design Space Rovers, Visit Johnson Space Center
Seventy-six students from community colleges in 28 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico have been selected to travel to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, May 20th-22nd. The students will participate in a three-day on-site event to develop robotic explorers that will rove the surfaces of other worlds.
The event is the culmination of the National Community College Aerospace Scholars pilot program. Students completed four Web-based assignments during the school year. Those who maintained a 95 average qualified for the experience at Johnson. After interacting with NASA engineers, the students will apply what they learned, and learn more about careers in science and engineering.
"This represents another innovative NASA project whereby community college students engage in actual engineering design and production – from concept to build-out – that simulate the process NASA uses in designing robotic explorers for solar system destinations," said Joyce Winterton, associate administrator for Education at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "It successfully demonstrates and furthers the participants’ academic knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,"
"NASA is very proud of the outstanding work these students already have completed, and we look forward to seeing their rover designs," said Deborah Hutchings, the program manager at Johnson. "These students have a unique opportunity to preview how a career in science, technology, engineering or math can lead them on a journey of space exploration."
The National Community College Aerospace Scholars is a pilot program based on the Texas Aerospace Scholars. Both programs are designed to encourage community and junior college students to enter careers in science and engineering, with a goal of attracting them to the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines critical to NASA's future missions. Cablevision, Comcast and Time Warner Cable Internet Customers Can Now Roam Free Across Three WiFi Networks
Cablevision, Comcast, and Time Warner Cable announced an agreement to allow their high-speed Internet customers to roam freely across the companies' respective WiFi networks at no additional charge, expanding the reach of cable WiFi in the New York metropolitan area. High-speed Internet customers served by any of the companies can now receive free wireless Internet access on a full range of WiFi-enabled devices, including the iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and laptop computers.
The companies have deployed thousands of WiFi access points across the market, providing free wireless Internet connections as a complement to broadband service as demand for mobile data continues to increase. Each access point today displays authentication options for all three WiFi services - Optimum WiFi, Time Warner Cable WiFi and Xfinity WiFi - allowing customers to use their own provider's sign-on process to get online.
"Cable providers interconnecting WiFi services so customers can roam freely across networks is an extremely meaningful and transformative development," said John Bickham, Cablevision's president of cable and communications. "This agreement – the first of its kind and, we believe, the first of many – combines the reach and the value of our respective WiFi deployments and delivers fast and free wireless Internet access that stretches across the market, at a time when consumer demand for mobile data is exploding."
"Our customers are purchasing devices that have WiFi built into them and increasingly want wireless broadband access anytime, anywhere," said Cathy Avgiris, SVP and GM of Communications and Data Services at Comcast. "With this partnership, we're excited to offer a great in-home and on-the-go Internet experience. As a result, our Xfinity Internet and High-Speed 2go customers can now connect and enjoy their devices in more locations in the tri-state area."
"This unique partnership is a win-win for our one million Road Runner customers in the NYC metro area, adding another dimension of value and convenience," said Howard Szarfarc, Executive Vice President of Time Warner Cable's NYC region.
With more and more WiFi-enabled devices coming to market, WiFi access to the Internet is becoming more important each day. Hopefully more cities will see this kind of interconnection soon.

Apple Delays International iPad Launch Until Late May
Apple released the following statement today, detailing the delay of the international launch of the iPad:
Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad. We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.
Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason—the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far.

Twitter Announces Advertising in Searches
Twitter announced a new service, called Promoted Tweets, which a number of advertising partners that include Best Buy, Bravo, Red Bull, Sony Pictures, Starbucks, and Virgin America, have signed on for. Promoted Tweets are ordinary Tweets that businesses and organizations want to highlight to a wider group of users. Users will start to see Tweets promoted by advertisers at the top of some Twitter.com search results pages. Twitter stated that they will attempt to measure whether the Tweets resonate with users and stop showing Promoted Tweets that don’t. Promoted Tweets will be clearly labeled as “promoted” when an advertiser is paying, but will first exist as regular Tweets and will be organically sent to the timelines of those who follow are already following a particular company. Promoted Tweets will also retain all the functionality of a regular Tweet including replying, Retweeting, and favoriting, and only one Promoted Tweet will be displayed on a search results page.
Once Twitter has had a chance to study the results of the new Promoted Tweets service, the company plans to allow Promoted Tweets to be shown by Twitter clients, other partners, and to expand beyond Twitter search, including displaying relevant Promoted Tweets in user timelines in a way that they feel will be useful to the user. The company also pointed out that one difference between a Promoted Tweet and a regular Tweet is that Promoted Tweets must resonate with users. If users don’t interact with a Promoted Tweet, such as replying to it, favoriting it, or Retweeting it, the Promoted Tweet will disappear.

Amazon Web Services Introduces Amazon Simple Notification Service
Amazon Web Services announced the beta release of Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS) - a new web service that makes it easy to set up, operate and send notifications from the cloud. Amazon SNS provides developers with a highly scalable, flexible, and cost-effective capability to publish messages from an application and immediately deliver them to subscribers or other applications. It is designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers, with no up-front investments and users only paying for the resources used.
"Building and maintaining messaging systems is the type of undifferentiated heavy lifting that AWS works to remove for our customers," said Adam Selipsky, Vice President of Amazon Web Services. "An easy-to-implement and highly scalable notification service like Amazon SNS will enable businesses to avoid building this component themselves. And, for entrepreneurs, Amazon SNS makes it operationally and financially viable to create new types of applications that are heavily reliant on push notifications."
Customers of Amazon SNS benefit from pay-as-you-go pricing with no up-front fees or commitments. The only costs of sending messages through Amazon SNS are small per-request, notification delivery, and data transfer fees. Developers can get started with Amazon SNS for free. Each month, Amazon SNS customers pay no charges for the first 100,000 Amazon SNS Requests, no charges for the first 100,000 Notifications over HTTP, and no charges for the first 1,000 Notifications over Email. The company stated that many applications may be able to operate just within these free tier limits. For more information, visit: http://aws.amazon.com/sns

U.S. Court of Appeals Rules Against FCC on Net Neutrality
The U.S. Court of Appeals ruled against the FCC on the matter of Net Neutrality, siding with Comcast, stating that the FCC lacks the authority to impose restrictions on broadband providers and how they operate their networks.
“The FCC is firmly committed to promoting an open Internet and to policies that will bring the enormous benefits of broadband to all Americans. It will rest these policies -- all of which will be designed to foster innovation and investment while protecting and empowering consumers -- on
a solid legal foundation," said Federal Communications Commission Spokesperson Jen Howard. “Today’s court decision invalidated the prior Commission’s approach to preserving an open Internet. But the Court in no way disagreed with the importance of preserving a free and open Internet; nor did it close the door to other methods for achieving this important end.”
The decision came as a great victory for Comcast, who challenged the FCC after being cited when customers complained about the company blocking certain peer-to-peer applications on its network. Though the FCC intends to continue to work towards "a free and open Internet," the court's ruling could have further implications down the road if other challenges arise. Stay tuned...

Ford and Microsoft Team Up to Make Electric Vehicle Recharging More Effective and More Affordable
Ford Motor Co. and Microsoft announced a new solution that will make electric vehicle ownership easier and more affordable for consumers. The two companies are teaming up to implement the Microsoft Hohm energy management application for Ford’s electric vehicles. Ford is the first automaker announcing the use of Hohm, starting with the Focus Electric next year. Hohm will help owners determine when and how to most efficiently and affordably recharge battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). It also should help utility companies manage the added demands of electric vehicles on the electrical grid.
“Ford and Microsoft both share a strong commitment to contributing to a better world. Today, we begin the next major step in our working together and leading the way for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability,” said Alan Mulally, Ford Motor Company president and CEO. “For Ford, this is a needed step in the development of the infrastructure that will make electric vehicles viable.”
Both companies agree that effective management of the energy ecosystem is critical for electric vehicles to be successful and for consumer interest to grow. Increasing numbers of electric vehicles, however, will have a significant impact on energy demand, because the addition of an electric vehicle to a household could effectively double home energy consumption while the vehicle is charging.
“Electric vehicles will play an important role in the global effort to improve energy efficiency and address the issues of climate change and sustainability,” said Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO. “But as the market for electric vehicles expands, it will have a significant impact on home energy consumption and demand across the nation’s energy grid. With Microsoft Hohm, Ford and Microsoft will deliver a solution that will make it easier for car owners to make smart decisions about the most affordable and efficient ways to recharge electric vehicles, while giving utilities better tools for managing the expected changes in energy demand.”
Hohm, an Internet-based service, is designed to help customers avoid unnecessary expense by providing insight into their energy usage patterns and suggesting recommendations to increase conservation. With Ford electric vehicles, Hohm also will help drivers to determine the best time to charge their vehicle. Ford and Microsoft also plan to continue to work with utility partners and municipalities to help further develop the energy ecosystem. Ford’s work includes collaboration with a dozen North American energy companies to road-test a fleet of 21 Ford Escape plug-in hybrid vehicles. The research has accumulated more than 160,000 miles of real-world data, which provided important groundwork for the new Hohm application.

NASA Mars Spacecraft Snaps Photos Chosen by Public
The most powerful camera aboard a NASA spacecraft orbiting Mars has returned the first pictures of locations on the Red Planet suggested by the public. Through a program called HiWish that began in January, scientists have received approximately 1,000 suggestions. The first eight images -- taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, or HiRISE camera, aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, or MRO -- of areas the public selected are available online at: uahirise.org/releases/hiwish-captions.php
"NASA's Mars program is a prime example of what we call participatory exploration," NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden said. "To allow the public to aim a camera at a specific site on a distant world is an invaluable teaching tool that can help educate and inspire our youth to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math."
Since 2006, HiRISE has obtained approximately 13,000 observations covering dozens of square miles, including areas from a student-suggestion program called NASA Quest. However, only about 1 percent of the Martian surface has been photographed. The public is encouraged to recommend sites for the other 99 percent. To make a suggestion, visit: uahirise.org/hiwish

iPhone Coming to Verizon, Sprint? Could Apple's AT&T 3G iPad Deal Indicate Truth to the Rumors?
Reports have been surfacing that a new version of the iPhone could be coming to Verizon, and possibly Sprint, later this year. The new phone would operate on CDMA networks, which Verizon and Sprint both use. Apple hasn't commented on the reports, so for now the rumors are just that. If the reports turn out to be true, however, it could be a major blow to AT&T, as the company has been plagued by negative comments from customers about the reliability of its 3G service for some time now. No doubt, if given another option for iPhone service, those same customers would surely jump ship for another carrier. Could this explain the recent exclusive deal Apple made with AT&T to deliver 3G service for the company's new iPad? If Apple is planning to offer the iPhone through other carriers, it would certainly make sense as a gesture to help soften the blow for AT&T. Stay tuned...

iPad Arrives This Saturday for Pre-Order Customers; More Recent Online Orders Expected to Arrive by April 12th
Apple’s new iPad, which lets users browse the web, read and send email, view and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and more, will be available in all 221 US Apple retail stores and most Best Buy stores this Saturday, April 3rd, beginning at 9 a.m. Customers who pre-ordered the new device can expect to receive thier order by April 3rd as well, while those who weren't able to meet the pre-order deadline can expect their orders to arrive by April 12th. Reports have been coming in that the iPad has sold out its current stock, but Apple is working hard to produce more as quickly as possible, so shortages will be kept to a minimum. That being the case, unless you have already ordered an iPad for home delivery or pickup at a retail store, it may be difficult to find one to buy on April 3rd, even at a store such as Best Buy, where limited amounts are expected to be in stock on the day of the launch.
Apple retail stores will offer a free Personal Setup service to every customer who buys an iPad at the store, helping them customize their new iPad by setting up their email, loading their favorite apps from the App Store, and more. Also beginning Saturday morning, all US Apple retail stores will host special iPad workshops to help customers learn more about the iPad.
“iPad connects users with their apps and content in a far more intimate and fun way than ever before,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We can’t wait for users to get their hands and fingers on it this weekend.”
iPad will be available in Wi-Fi models on April 3rd in the US for $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, and $699 for 64GB. The Wi-Fi + 3G models will be available in late April for $629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB and $829 for 64GB. iPad will be sold in the US through the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores, most Best Buy stores, select Apple Authorized Resellers and campus bookstores. The iBooks app for iPad including Apple’s iBookstore will be available as a free download from the App Store in the US on April 3rd.

Over the coming months, Google will be reviewing the responses to determine where to build. As the company narrows down its choices, they'll be conducting site visits, meeting with local officials, and consulting with third-party organizations. Once all of the data has been reviewed, Google will then announce their target community or communities by the end of the year.
Google's goal is to reach a total of at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people with the experiment, and help to improve Internet access everywhere.

Microsoft Announces Communications Server "14"
Microsoft announced the next version of its unified communications software, code-named Communications Server “14,” at the VoiceCon Orlando 2010 conference. The new software will be available in the second half of 2010. In his keynote address, Gurdeep Singh Pall, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Office Communications Group, demonstrated the new software for the first time publicly and said Communications Server “14” will help make communications simpler, more open and more cost-efficient.
Pall said the new software includes a complete communications solution, with full enterprise telephony; a familiar and powerful way to communicate and collaborate using a simplified Communicator client that works with Microsoft Office, Microsoft SharePoint Server and Microsoft Exchange; and a versatile platform that allows customers to embed communications in applications. In addition, customers will be able to use instant messaging, presence and other capabilities of the software both on-premises and in the cloud with Microsoft Office Communications Online.
Among the capabilities demonstrated, Pall showed how Communications Server “14” helps people find colleagues based on their expertise through a new skill search feature. The new skill search feature also helps people find when their colleagues are available to collaborate and, with a new location-awareness feature, where they are available. The new features easily initiate collaboration, and allow users to bring together the content, resources, and people needed to work together.
“With software at the center, innovation in this industry has accelerated, leading to the introduction of new capabilities that leapfrog traditional hardware-bound communications systems,” Pall said.

Google's New Approach to China
After a January 12th announcement from Google that they and more than twenty other U.S. companies had been the victims of a sophisticated cyber attack originating from China came to light, relations between Google and the Chinese government have been strained, to say the least. During Google's investigation into the attacks, they discovered evidence to suggest that the Gmail accounts of dozens of human rights activists connected with China were being routinely accessed by third parties, most likely via phishing scams or malware placed on their computers. Those activities, combined with continued attempts to further limit free speech on the web in China, led the company to conclude that they could no longer continue censoring their results on Google.cn.
Today Google announced that they have stopped censoring Google Search, Google News, and Google Images on Google.cn. Users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to Google.com.hk, where Google is offering uncensored search in simplified Chinese, specifically designed for users in mainland China and delivered via the company's servers in Hong Kong. Users in Hong Kong will continue to receive their existing uncensored, traditional Chinese service, also from Google.com.hk. This new approach of providing uncensored search in simplified Chinese from Google.com.hk is entirely legal, according to the company, and Google stated that it hopes the Chinese government will respect their decision. Google also stated that it intends to continue R&D work in China and also intends to maintain a sales presence there.

The FCC Unveils Plans for Nationwide Broadband
The FCC released a new plan to expand broadband coverage across the country; a plan they believe will help grow the economy, create jobs, and help the U.S. to compete better in a global environment.
Over the next ten years, the plan hopes to have 100 million U.S. homes receive Internet speeds of 100 megabits per second. As an added measure to achieve this goal, the FCC will be looking to broadcasters to voluntarily part with some of their airwaves, making them available for wireless companies to purchase by auction. Many, however, believe it will be a hard case for the FCC to make, unless broadcasters are given a large percentage of the auction proceeds.
Will broadband cover the country in the next ten years? With many believing that high-speed Internet access is no longer a luxury, but a necessity, any opposition to the plan will no doubt be met with an equal share of support. As more companies get behind it, and with proper funding, the FCC may just reach its goals. For more information, visit: www.broadband.gov

Twitter Announces @anywhere
Twitter announced that it has developed a new set of frameworks for adding the Twitter experience anywhere on the web. The new set of frameworks is called @anywhere, and soon sites that many visit every day will be able to recreate the Twitter experience for their visitors locally, instead of having to send them away to Twitter.com. Rather than implementing APIs, site owners will simply be able to place a few lines of javascript into their pages.
At launch, initial participating sites will include Amazon, AdAge, Bing, Citysearch, Digg, eBay, The Huffington Post, Meebo, MSNBC.com, The New York Times, Salesforce.com, Yahoo!, and YouTube. Users will able to do such things as follow someone directly from the site they happen to be browsing at the time, discover new Twitter accounts, and tweet without having to leave a site as well. Though no exact dates have been given yet as to when @anywhere will launch, the idea sounds intriguing, and should prove to be popular among users should it perform as described. Stay tuned...

Microsoft Unveils Virtual Senior Center
Microsoft, the city of New York, and Selfhelp Community Services Inc. today unveiled their Virtual Senior Center, an innovative public-private partnership and demonstration project that is showing how cities can use technology to revitalize senior centers and enhance the lives of homebound seniors. The Virtual Senior Center uses computer, video and Internet technology to create an interactive experience for homebound seniors that reduces social isolation and gives them better access to community services.
“The New York City Department for the Aging is deeply committed to improving the quality of life for older New Yorkers, and this partnership with Microsoft and Selfhelp Community Services in creating the Virtual Senior Center is one more step toward making New York City the most age-friendly city in the nation,” said Lilliam Barrios-Paoli, commissioner of the New York City Department for the Aging (DFTA). “Senior centers are the social hub for many older New Yorkers, and this new model — the Virtual Senior Center — has shown us that technology will help seniors age in place and remain integrated into the community by bringing that same senior center experience into the home.”
The Virtual Senior Center demonstration project — jointly undertaken by Microsoft, the New York City DFTA and the Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications (DoITT), and Selfhelp Community Services — links six homebound seniors (ranging in age from 67 to 103) to Selfhelp’s Benjamin Rosenthal Senior Center in Flushing, Queens. Each of the six seniors’ homes is equipped with a desktop computer running Windows 7 as well as a touch-screen monitor, a small video camera, a microphone and broadband Internet service.
Video cameras and monitors have been strategically placed around the senior center to enable the homebound seniors to interact with classmates and instructors at the center, and to take part in activities such as armchair yoga, painting classes, current events discussions and tai chi. Using the technology, seniors at home can see and hear the other people in the class and actively participate in two-way discussions and activities. Since beginning the project, some have even made new friends. It’s Never 2 Late, a Colorado company that creates specialty technology packages for seniors, provides the custom interface.

Verizon, Juniper, NEC, and Finisar Conduct 100G Field Trial
Verizon, Juniper Networks, NEC Corporation of America, and Finisar Corp. announced the successful completion of the first real traffic 100 gigabits per second (100G) optical fiber transmission field trial applying standards-based optics end-to-end and using the latest in 100G native router interfaces.
This 100G accomplishment, which occurred on February 25th, used emerging network technology to transmit data over a 1,520-kilometer optically amplified section of the Verizon network in the north Dallas area. The multivendor demonstration validated the maturity of the standard supporting 100G transfer rates, which is scheduled to be ratified by the IEEE and ITU-T in June.
"With IP traffic on the Verizon network growing year over year, 100G is critical to continuing to satisfy customers' demands, which drive the capacity requirements of our core network," said Mark Wegleitner, senior vice president of technology at Verizon. "Verizon has already deployed 100G on a segment of our European network, and trials such as this allow us to refine relevant technologies and push 100G closer to widespread deployment."
This Verizon trial demonstrated end-to-end traffic flow, including live video traffic, through a 100G interface on the Juniper T1600 Core Router to the NEC SpectralWave DWDM system, which was equipped with 100G real-time coherent transponders. The connection between the router and the DWDM system was achieved through an IEEE standard-compliant 100GBASE-LR4 client interface, using 100G CFP optical transceiver modules from Finisar Corp.
The field trial marked an important step toward advancing 100G transmission, which is vital to the continued growth of IP-based services and applications. As traffic from wireless and wired broadband devices continues to grow, communications carriers and equipment providers must continually innovate to expand and enhance the capability of core networks with technologies such as 100G connectivity.

Apple Sues HTC for Patent Infringement
Apple has filed a lawsuit against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware.
“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”
Though the iPhone is still the clear leader in its smartphone class, the Android operating system, which HTC is using in many of its latest phones, including the Nexus One model that it makes for Google, has been growing in popularity as new phones comes to market. If Apple is successful in its suit against HTC, how such a win would affect other competitors remains to be seen. Stay tuned...

NASA Radar Finds Ice Deposits at Moon's North Pole
Using data from a NASA radar that flew aboard India's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, scientists have detected ice deposits near the moon's north pole. NASA's Mini-SAR instrument, a lightweight, synthetic aperture radar, found more than 40 small craters with water ice. The craters range in size from 1 to 9 miles (2 to15 km) in diameter. Although the total amount of ice depends on its thickness in each crater, it's estimated there could be at least 1.3 trillion pounds (600 million metric tons) of water ice.
"The emerging picture from the multiple measurements and resulting data of the instruments on lunar missions indicates that water creation, migration, deposition and retention are occurring on the moon," said Paul Spudis, principal investigator of the Mini-SAR experiment at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston. "The new discoveries show the moon is an even more interesting and attractive scientific, exploration and operational destination than people had previously thought."
During the past year, the Mini-SAR mapped the moon's permanently-shadowed polar craters that aren't visible from Earth. The radar uses the polarization properties of reflected radio waves to characterize surface properties. Results from the mapping showed deposits having radar characteristics similar to ice.
"After analyzing the data, our science team determined a strong indication of water ice, a finding which will give future missions a new target to further explore and exploit," said Jason Crusan, program executive for the Mini-RF Program for NASA's Space Operations Mission Directorate in Washington.
The Mini-SAR's findings are being published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. The results are consistent with recent findings of other NASA instruments and add to the growing scientific understanding of the multiple forms of water found on the moon. The agency's Moon Mineralogy Mapper discovered water molecules in the moon's polar regions, while water vapor was detected by NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS.

Twitter Warns Users About Phishing Attacks
Over the past few days, Twitter has seen a rise in the number of users affected by phishing attacks, where an attempt is made to acquire sensitive information such as a person's Twitter username and password. The people behind the attacks masquerade as someone you trust and may send you a Direct Message with a link that leads to a fake Twitter login page. If a person enters their information on that page, a phisher can then hijack the users account, and send out more messages under the account holder's name. Twitter has been working to prevent these kinds of attacks, and stop the spread of phishing attacks when they do arise. The company recommends that users avoid indiscriminately following hundreds or thousands of accounts without first checking them out for themselves, suggests reading the Keeping Your Account Secure article at our the Twitter help site.

NASA Launches Solar Dynamics Observatory
NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, lifted off Thursday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Launch Complex 41 on a first-of-a-kind mission to reveal the sun's inner workings in unprecedented detail. The most technologically advanced of NASA's heliophysics spacecraft, SDO will take images of the sun every 0.75 seconds and daily send back about 1.5 terabytes of data to Earth -- the equivalent of streaming 380 full-length movies.
"This is going to be sensational," said Richard R. Fisher, director of the Heliophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "SDO is going to make a huge step forward in our understanding of the sun and its effects on life and society."
The sun's dynamic processes affect everyone and everything on Earth. SDO will explore activity on the sun that can disable satellites, cause power grid failures, and disrupt GPS communications. SDO also will provide a better understanding of the role the sun plays in Earth's atmospheric chemistry and climate.

Microsoft and the National Science Foundation Enable Research in the Cloud
Microsoft and the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced an agreement that will offer individual researchers and research groups selected through NSF’s merit review process free access to advanced cloud computing resources. The program is designed to help broaden researcher capabilities, foster collaborative research communities, and accelerate scientific discovery. Projects will be awarded and managed by NSF.
“Cloud computing can transform how research is conducted, accelerating scientific exploration, discovery and results,” said Dan Reed, corporate vice president, Technology Strategy and Policy and eXtreme Computing at Microsoft. “These grants will also help researchers explore rich and diverse multidisciplinary data on a large scale.”
The goal of the new program is to make simple yet powerful tools available that any researcher can use to extract insights by mining and combining diverse data sets. Microsoft will provide cloud computing research projects identified by NSF with access to Windows Azure for a three-year period, along with a support team to help researchers quickly integrate cloud technology into their research. Windows Azure provides on-demand compute and storage to host, scale and manage Web applications on the Internet through Microsoft datacenters. Microsoft researchers and developers will work with grant recipients to equip them with a set of common tools, applications and data collections that can be shared with the broad academic community, and also provide its expertise in research, science and cloud computing.
“We’ve entered a new era of science — one based on data-driven exploration — and each new generation of computing technology, such as cloud computing, creates unprecedented opportunities for discovery,” said Jeannette M. Wing, assistant director for the NSF Computer and Information Science directorate. “We are working with Microsoft to provide the academic community a novel cloud computing service with which to experiment and explore, with the grander goal of advancing the frontiers of science and engineering as we tackle societal grand challenges.”

Kindle Facing More Pricing Battles
Rupert Murdoch, who heads up News Corp, which includes HarperCollins books, is reportedly not happy with the pricing structure of Amazon's Kindle e- books, wanting to go against the Kindle store policy of $9.99 new release titles, in favor of higher prices. Coming on the heels of Amazon's recent spat with Macmillan, where the company reluctantly agreed to let Macmillan charge $12.99 to $14.99 for its titles, instead of the traditional $9.99, a similar dispute with Murdoch could create a new wave of higher pricing for new release e-book titles, that could change Amazon's Kindle books pricing structure for good.
Amazon has long featured the $9.99 new release titles as a benefit of Kindle ownership, but if publishers decide to raise their e-book titles, it could affect Kindle Store sales, with customers making fewer purchases. The move could also backfire on publishers, causing them to lose sales, instead of increasing their profits. After all, it's better to have 1,000 sales at $9.99 than 100 sales at $14.99, but we'll just have to wait and see how things play out. Stay tuned...

NASA Selects Commercial Firms to Develop Technology for Human Spaceflight
NASA has awarded $50 million through funded agreements to further the commercial sector's capability to support transport of crew to and from low Earth orbit. Through an open competition for funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, NASA has awarded Space Act Agreements to Blue Origin of Kent, Wash.; The Boeing Company of Houston; Paragon Space Development Corporation of Tucson, Ariz.; Sierra Nevada Corporation of Louisville, Colo.; and United Launch Alliance of Centennial, Colo. The agreements are for the development of crew concepts and technology demonstrations and investigations for future commercial support of human spaceflight.
The Space Act Agreements are designed to foster entrepreneurial activity leading to high-tech job growth in engineering, analysis, design and research, and to promote economic growth as capabilities for new markets are created. Funding for these Space Act Agreements will stimulate efforts within the private sector to develop and demonstrate human spaceflight capabilities.
"These selections represent a critical step to enable future commercial human spaceflight," said Doug Cooke, associate administrator for Exploration Systems at NASA. "These impressive proposals will advance NASA significantly along the path to using commercial services to ferry astronauts to and from low Earth orbit, and we look forward to working with the selected teams," Cooke said.
Amazon to Accept Macmillan E-book Pricing
In a message posted to the Kindle forum, Amazon stated:
"Macmillan, one of the "big six" publishers, has clearly communicated to us that, regardless of our viewpoint, they are committed to switching to an agency model and charging $12.99 to $14.99 for e-book versions of bestsellers and most hardcover releases.
We have expressed our strong disagreement and the seriousness of our disagreement by temporarily ceasing the sale of all Macmillan titles. We want you to know that ultimately, however, we will have to capitulate and accept Macmillan's terms because Macmillan has a monopoly over their own titles, and we will want to offer them to you even at prices we believe are needlessly high for e-books. Amazon customers will at that point decide for themselves whether they believe it's reasonable to pay $14.99 for a bestselling e-book. We don't believe that all of the major publishers will take the same route as Macmillan. And we know for sure that many independent presses and self-published authors will see this as an opportunity to provide attractively priced e-books as an alternative.
Kindle is a business for Amazon, and it is also a mission. We never expected it to be easy!
Thank you for being a customer."
Whether this will open the door for other publishers to raise prices on their e-books remains to be seen, but the move by Macmillan could also have the opposite effect, driving prices lower to drive customers to less expensive titles. In the end, however, if a customer really wants a book for their device, they probably will fork over the extra money for the title. We applaud Amazon for being honest with their customers, and Macmillan should realize that even if customers pay the extra money for titles they publish, they won't be happy about doing it. Is $3-$5 really worth tarnishing a company image? Stay tuned...

New York Times to Charge for Web Site Access Next Year
The New York Times will begin charging for full access to its Web site starting next year, according to reports. With the way content is being consumed changing, the move is designed to gain increased revenues online, without losing site traffic, which could negatively affect online advertising dollars. The Times would continue to allow free access to a limited number of articles, but charge a subscription fee for readers that want full access to all of the site's content. Print version subscribers of the Times would continue to have full access to the site. Whether the changes will be successful, or backfire on the company, remains to be seen, but it is a problem being faced by many print publishers, as more and more readers move to digital content.

AT&T is offering assistance to earthquake victims in Haiti by providing support to two international relief agencies. Google Threatens to Leave China
After being targeted by attacks that were reportedly designed to gather information about human rights activists, Google announced that it would stop censoring results on the Chinese version of its search engine. Further, Google has stated that it might leave China entirely. Though no official reply has come from the Chinese government yet concerning Google's statement, China has reportedly told companies to cooperate with state's control of the Internet. Chinese residents, however, are standing behind Google for standing up to the censorship issues that have plagued China for so long. With growing pressure from the international community over censorship issues, it remains to be seen if China will relax its policies, where Google is concerned, to strengthen the government's public image, or not.

Google Launches Nexus One Android "Superphone"
Google unveiled its own mobile phone today, the Nexus One, which combines hardware from HTC Corporation with the newest Android software, marking the company's first entry into the mobile phone hardware arena.
Through a new web store found at www.google.com/phone, consumers can buy the Nexus One without service (meaning any GSM network SIM card can be inserted into the device), or purchase the phone with service from one of Google's operator partners. As new phones come to market through this channel, consumers will benefit from the ability to match a phone of their choice with the service plan that best meets their needs. Operator prices and plan details will be featured on the site.
"The Nexus One belongs in the emerging class of devices which we call ‘superphones,’ with the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset making it as powerful as your laptop computer of three to four years ago. It's our way to raise the bar on what's possible when it comes to creating the best mobile experience for consumers," said Andy Rubin, VP of Engineering. "We look forward to working with handset manufacturers and operators to bring more phones to market through this channel worldwide."
The Nexus One features a 3.7" AMOLED 480x800 WVGA display, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, 5 megapixel auto focus camera with flash and geo tagging, 512MB Flash memory, 512MB RAM, and a 4GB removable SD Card (expandable to 32GB). Running Android 2.1, the Nexus One also features Google Maps Navigation (offering turn-by-turn driving directions with voice output), Exchange support, and the Android Market, which gives users access to more than 18,000 applications.
Nexus One is available from the Google web store in the US without service for $529 or can be purchased for $179 with a two-year contract from T-Mobile USA. Verizon Wireless in the US and Vodafone in Europe plan to offer services to customers as well in the near future. Google will initially be taking orders from consumers in the US, UK, Singapore, and Hong Kong. In the coming months, Google plans on partnering with additional operators. The company also expects to launch more phones with Android handset partners, and plans to expand the web store to more countries in the future. Skype Comes to TV
Skype announced partnerships with LG and Panasonic to offer Skype–enabled HDTVs, where Skype software will be embedded into Panasonic’s line of 2010 VIERA CAST-enabled HDTVs and LG’s 26 new LCD and plasma HDTVs with NetCast Entertainment Access. Both lines of HDTVs are expected to be available in mid-2010. Both LG and Panasonic will offer specially-designed HD webcams that are optimized for Skype video calls as separate accessories that can be plugged into the televisions. These webcams support 720p HD and include special microphones and optics that can pick up sound and video from a distance.
“The popularity of Skype video calling has increased substantially in recent years with an average of 34% of Skype-to-Skype calls now including video,” added Silverman. “For many people who are video calling on Skype, they have expressed a desire to communicate with their friends and family from somewhere comfortable, and preferably on a big screen. Logically, this led to the development of Skype embedded on HDTVs.”
Skype recommends uninterrupted high-speed broadband of at least 1 Mbps symmetrical bandwidth to achieve 720p HD-quality video calls on either a PC or television. For more information about Skype-enabled televisions, visit skype.com/go/tv

NASA's Mars Rover Has Uncertain Future After Celebrating Sixth Anniversary
NASA's Mars rover Spirit marked six years of unprecedented exploration on Sunday, after landing on the Red Planet at 8:35 p.m. PST on January 3, 2004. At that time, the rover began a mission intended to last for three months, but ended up lasting six years, or 3.2 Mars years. Unfortunately, Spirit's wheels have broken through a crusty surface layer into loose sand hidden underneath, and efforts so far to escape this sand trap have been unsuccessful. On top of that, NASA's rover team may not be able to position the robot's solar panels to tilt toward the sun to collect power for heat to survive the severe Martian winter.
"The highest priority for this mission right now is to stay mobile, if that's possible," said Steve Squyres of Cornell University, principal investigator for the rovers.
If mobility is not possible, the next priority is to improve the rover's tilt, while Spirit is able to generate enough electricity to turn its wheels. Unless the tilt can be improved, the gradual buildup of dust on the rover's solar panels will lessen the amount of sunshine available to keep it operating.
"At the current rate of dust accumulation, solar arrays at zero tilt would provide barely enough energy to run the survival heaters through the Mars winter solstice," said Jennifer Herman, a rover power engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.
The team, however, hasn't given up, and is evaluating strategies for improving the rover's tilt even if Spirit cannot escape the sand trap. Should Spirit survive the winter, and not escape the sand, NASA says the rover can continue to perform significant research in its current location, such as studying the interior of Mars, monitoring the weather, and examining the deposits its wheels have uncovered.
