NASA Simulates Space Exploration At Remote Arctic Crater Site
NASA personnel, and other international researchers, are in the Canadian Arctic assessing concepts for future planetary exploration as part of the Haughton-Mars Project (HMP-2010). Scientists are using the arid, rocky environment of the Haughton Crater on Devon Island, Canada to simulate conditions that might be encountered by explorers on other planetary bodies. The latest edition of the HMP-2010 began July 19th, and includes three weeks of crew and mission control activities and robotic testing.
"Explorers, such as geologists, often find themselves with a set of observations they would have liked to make, or samples they would have liked to take, if only they had been able to stay longer at a site," said Terry Fong, director of the Intelligent Robotics Group at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "Our work this year is to study how remotely -operated robots, perhaps even vehicles previously used for crew transport, can be used to perform follow-up work."
During HMP-2010, NASA will deploy robots developed by the Intelligent Robotics Group at Ames. The robots, known as K10s, are equipped with a variety of instruments including 3-D scanning lidar, color imagers, spectrometers and ground-penetrating radar. The K10s will map systematically above and below ground structures and characterize rocks, soil and landscape of key areas at Haughton Crater. NASA will also conduct a series of experiments designed to examine how future surface systems, such as crew rovers, might be repositioned robotically from one location to a new rendezvous location with astronauts.
The Haughton-Mars Project is an international, multidisciplinary field research project focused on the scientific study of the crater and surrounding terrain on Devon Island. The site's polar desert setting, geological features and microbiology make the crater a good site for moon and Mars analog studies. HMP-2010 is managed by the Mars Institute in Moffett Field, Calif., in collaboration with the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. AT&T Wi-Fi Hotzone Pilot Project Expanded to Additional Cities
AT&T announced it has created an AT&T Wi-Fi hotzone in downtown Charlotte, N.C. to enhance mobile broadband coverage for AT&T customers. The outdoor Wi-Fi hotzone provides coverage along South Brevard Street from the area around the NASCAR Hall of Fame Plaza to East Trade Street, as well as for those waiting to use the Lynx light rail.
The Charlotte, N.C., AT&T Wi-Fi hotzone is the second to be deployed as part of a pilot project to explore using Wi-Fi to supplement AT&T’s mobile broadband coverage in areas with consistently high 3G traffic and mobile data use. AT&T launched its first pilot Wi-Fi hotzone in New York City’s Times Square in May. Customer usage has been better than expected. AT&T plans to further expand the pilot project with the launch of a third AT&T Wi-Fi hotzone in Chicago in the coming weeks.
“Our first AT&T Wi-Fi hotzone in New York City has received praise from our customers, and we’re excited to introduce this Wi-Fi solution in Charlotte,” said Angie Wiskocil, senior vice president, AT&T Wi-Fi Services. “Wi-Fi plays a key role in our strategy to mobilize everything that’s important to our customers – including entertainment, news, social networks and business apps. With these pilot AT&T Wi-Fi hotzones, we’re examining new ways to use a combination of our Wi-Fi and 3G networks to deliver the best possible mobile broadband experience.”
The expanded pilot program will allow AT&T to gather more information and customer feedback in order to continue to evaluate the benefits of Wi-Fi hotzones, and provide another mobile broadband option for customers. Customers can log onto AT&T Wi-Fi hotzones and more than 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots nationwide without it counting toward their monthly smartphone data usage. iPhone Jailbreaking to Become Legal for Owners
Owners of Apple's iPhone, as well as other devices, will legally be able to "jailbreak" their devices to download apps not approved by the company. New government rules will now reportedly allow customers to bypass a company's technical measures, designed to prevent unauthorized uses of a device, and use their device as they wish to. The new rules also include:
(1) Motion pictures on DVDs that are lawfully made and acquired and that are protected by the Content Scrambling System when circumvention is accomplished solely in order to accomplish the incorporation of short portions of motion pictures into new works for the purpose of criticism or comment, and where the person engaging in circumvention believes and has reasonable grounds for believing that circumvention is necessary to fulfill the purpose of the use in the following instances:
(i) Educational uses by college and university professors and by college and university film and media studies students;
(ii) Documentary filmmaking;
(iii) Noncommercial videos
(2) Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.
(3) Computer programs, in the form of firmware or software, that enable used wireless telephone handsets to connect to a wireless telecommunications network, when circumvention is initiated by the owner of the copy of the computer program solely in order to connect to a wireless telecommunications network and access to the network is authorized by the operator of the network.
(4) Video games accessible on personal computers and protected by technological protection measures that control access to lawfully obtained works, when circumvention is accomplished solely for the purpose of good faith testing for, investigating, or correcting security flaws or vulnerabilities, if:
(i) The information derived from the security testing is used primarily to promote the security of the owner or operator of a computer, computer system, or computer network; and
(ii) The information derived from the security testing is used or maintained in a manner that does not facilitate copyright infringement or a violation of applicable law.
(5) Computer programs protected by dongles that prevent access due to malfunction or damage and which are obsolete. A dongle shall be considered obsolete if it is no longer manufactured or if a replacement or repair is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace; and
(6) Literary works distributed in ebook format when all existing ebook editions of the work (including digital text editions made available by authorized entities) contain access controls that prevent the enabling either of the book’s read-aloud function or of screen readers that render the text into a specialized format.

Kindle Sales Soar
Amazon.com announced that Kindle sales have accelerated each month in the second quarter, both on a sequential month-over-month basis and on a year-over-year basis. Over the past three months, for every 100 hardcover books Amazon.com has sold, it has sold 143 Kindle books. Additionally, over the past month, for every 100 hardcover books Amazon.com has sold, it has sold 180 Kindle books. These numbers, reported by the company, span Amazon.com's entire U.S. book business and include sales of hardcover books where there is no Kindle edition. Free Kindle books are excluded in the report, but would make the number even higher if included.
"We've reached a tipping point with the new price of Kindle--the growth rate of Kindle device unit sales has tripled since we lowered the price from $259 to $189," said Jeff Bezos, Founder and CEO of Amazon.com. "In addition, even while our hardcover sales continue to grow, the Kindle format has now overtaken the hardcover format. Amazon.com customers now purchase more Kindle books than hardcover books--astonishing when you consider that we've been selling hardcover books for 15 years, and Kindle books for 33 months."
Amazon also stated that it has sold more than 3x as many Kindle books in the first half of 2010 as in the first half of 2009, while the Association of American Publishers' latest data reports that e-book sales grew 163 percent in the month of May and 207 percent year-to-date through May. Kindle book sales in May and year-to-date through May exceeded those growth rates. For more information about Amazon's Kindle, visit: www.amazon.com/kindle

Apple Releases iOS 4 Update, Offers Solution to Customers to Fix iPhone 4 Signal Issues
In a press conference held today, Apple CEO Steve Jobs took to the stage, and pointed out that many cell phones show a drop in bars when they are held in a certain way, not just the iPhone 4, and offered customers a solution to the problem. more

Apple to Hold Press Conference About iPhone 4 Issues
Apple announced that it will be holding a press conference tomorrow to discuss the iPhone 4, finally putting an end to its long silence regarding antenna issues and customer complaints about poor reception and dropped calls when the new phone is held firmly in the bottom left corner, where the problem area in question is located.
Since reports of some customers experiencing signal problems started coming in, the only solutions to come from the company have been to tell users to hold the phone in a different manner, buy a case for it, or return the phone if they weren't happy with it. Recently, Apple posted a letter indicating that a software glitch wasn't displaying the phone's signal strength bars properly, and that a fix was on the way, but the fix is not likely to remedy the true problem, which is harware related, according to several outside tests that have been conducted.
Apple's silence has only made matters worse, with customers becoming angry that no real solution to the problem has been offered up. Several class action lawsuits have been filed, and Consumer Reports stated that it could not fully recommend the iPhone 4 until the signal issues were resolved without added costs to customers. Consumer Reports did, however, praise the iPhone 4 in several other areas, stating that it in many ways it is significantly better than previous iPhone models. Their tests did show that using a case, or the rubber bumper sold by Apple will solve the problem, but they feel the cost of buying a case or bumper shouldn't be passed along to consumers to fix a problem with the device they purchased. Many agree.
Though no exact details have been released about the press conference, many expect Apple to address the signal loss issues, provide free rubber bumpers with every iPhone 4, or issue a recall of the phone so the problem can be fixed. A recall seems unlikely, especially since there are many reporting no problems at all with the phone they purchased. It seems much more likely that Apple will provide free bumpers that cover and protect the phone, since covering the area in question solves the problem, and would be the most cost effective way for Apple to resolve the issue. We'll have to wait and see. Be sure to check back here tomorrow for full coverage of the press conference, and all of the details and announcements discussed.

Worldwide PC Shipments Increase 21 Percent
Worldwide PC shipments reached 82.9 million units in the second quarter of 2010, a 20.7 percent increase from the second quarter of 2009, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc. These second quarter results were slightly above Gartner's earlier market outlook, with HP, Dell, and Acer leading the pack. Mini-notebook shipment growth slowed significantly in the second quarter of 2010, according to the company, but PC prices continued to fall, which is good news for consumers.
"The consumer PC market registered double-digit shipment growth, but consumer mobile shipment growth slowed. This was due in part to slower growth of mini-notebooks," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. "Surging popularity of Apple's iPad temporarily cannibalized mini-notebooks, as well as consumer notebook sales to some degree. It is not certain at this stage if the cannibalization will continue with the current price point of media tablets."
HP continued to be the industry leader in the U.S. PC market in the second quarter of 2010. Dell maintained the No. 2 position, supported by its sales into the professional PC market, while Acer experienced flat growth due to slowing sales of mini-notebooks and low-end notebooks. Gartner's early study also indicated that Apple recorded strong Mac shipments with no signs of iPad cannibalization.

BAE Systems Unveils the Taranis Unmanned Combat Aircraft
A prototype unmanned combat aircraft, Taranis, has been unveiled by the UK Ministry of Defence. Named after the Celtic god of thunder, the concept demonstrator will test the possibility of developing the first ever autonomous stealthy Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) that would be capable of precisely striking targets at long range, even in another continent.
“Taranis is a truly trailblazing project. The first of its kind in the UK, it reflects the best of our nation’s advanced design and technology skills and is a leading programme on the global stage,” said Minister for International Security Strategy Gerald Howarth, while speaking at the unveiling ceremony at BAE Systems in Warton, Lancashire.
The Taranis prototype will provide the UK MoD with critical knowledge on the technical and manufacturing challenges and the potential capabilities of Unmanned Combat Air Systems. Although designed to be fully automated, should such systems enter into service, they will at all times be under the control of trained military crews on the ground. Flight trials are due in 2011.

NASA Announces Three New Centennial Challenges
NASA announced three new Centennial Challenges, with an overall prize purse of $5 million. NASA's Centennial Challenges are prize competitions for technological achievements by independent teams who work without government funding.
"NASA sponsors prize competitions because the agency believes student teams, private companies of all sizes and citizen-inventors can provide creative solutions to problems of interest to NASA and the nation," said Bobby Braun, the agency's chief technologist. "Prize competitions are a proven way to foster technological competitiveness, new industries and innovation across America."
The Nano-Satellite Launch Challenge is to place a small satellite into Earth orbit, twice in one week, with a prize of $2 million. The Night Rover Challenge is to demonstrate a solar-powered exploration vehicle that can operate in darkness using its own stored energy. The prize purse is $1.5 million. The Sample Return Robot Challenge is to demonstrate a robot that can locate and retrieve geologic samples from wide and varied terrain without human control. This challenge has a prize purse of $1.5 million.
Centennial Challenges are extended to individuals, groups, and companies working outside the traditional aerospace industry. Awards are only made after solutions are successfully demonstrated. Since 2005, NASA has conducted 19 competition events in six challenge areas and awarded $4.5 million to 13 different teams. NASA and Microsoft Provide Mars 3-D Maps
NASA and Microsoft are bringing new features to the WorldWide Telescope software that will provide viewers with a high-resolution 3-D map of Mars. Microsoft's online virtual telescope explores the universe using images NASA spacecraft return from other worlds. Teams at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., and Microsoft in Redmond, Wash., jointly developed the software necessary to make NASA's planetary data available in WorldWide Telescope.
"By providing the Mars dataset to the public on the WorldWide Telescope platform, we are enabling a whole new audience to experience the thrill of space," said Chris C. Kemp, chief technology officer for information technology at NASA Headquarters in Washington.
The fully-interactive images and new NASA data will allow viewers to virtually explore Mars and make their own scientific discoveries. New features include the highest resolution fully interactive map of Mars ever created, realistic 3-D renderings of the surface of the planet and video tours with two NASA scientists, James Garvin of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and Carol Stoker of Ames.
"These incredibly detailed maps will enable the public to better experience and explore Mars," said Michael Broxton, a research scientist in the Intelligent Robotics Group at Ames. "The collaborative relationship between NASA and Microsoft Research was instrumental for creating the software that brings these new Mars images into people's hands, classrooms and living rooms."
"Microsoft has a long-standing relationship with NASA that has enabled us to jointly provide the public with the ability to discover space in a new way," said Tony Hey, corporate vice president of the External Research Division of Microsoft Research.
China Renews Google's Internet Content Provider License
China has renewed Google's Internet Content Provider License (ICP), after the company worked to make changes to the way it handled redirecting users from mainland China to its Hong Kong site, which is not censored. Instead of automatically being redirected to the Hong Kong site, mainland China users are now taken to a landing page with links to the Hong Kong site. The changes seem to have worked in Google's favor, as it was a waiting game to see whether or not China would renew the license.

iPhone 4 Antenna Issue: How to Fix
Some users have reported that when holding the iPhone 4 in their left hand, if their skin touches the small, black line that runs across the metal band the signal bars indicating the strength of their signal begins to drop after a minute or two. Reports from other users, however, state that they haven't had any problems with this particular issue at all. Overall, improved call quality and signal strength have been reported by most users, when the touching of the antenna issue that has surfaced isn't brought into play. If you normally hold your phone in your right hand, you probably won't have any problems. For those experiencing problems with fading signal strength, using a protective case, or one of the new rubber bumpers Apple sells for the iPhone 4, should solve the problem. The issue seems to only happen when a person's skin directly contacts the lower left edge of the metal band surrounding the phone. A case or bumper will prevent that direct contact.

Twitter to Launch Link Shortening Service
Twitter is testing a link shortening service that it hopes to make available to users sometime this summer. Once ready, links shared on Twitter.com or third-party apps will be wrapped with a t.co URL. The goal is to display links in a way that removes the obscurity of shortened URLs and lets users know where a link will take them before they click on it. By doing this, Twitter is hoping that the new service will detect, intercept, and prevent the spread of malware, phishing, and other dangers, which will increase safety. Developers who create applications on the Twitter platform can now begin to prepare for the service, by choosing how to best display wrapped links for a given device or application.

NASA and Japan Announce Cloud Computing Collaboration
NASA and Japan's National Institute of Informatics (NII) have announced plans to explore interoperability opportunities between NASA's Nebula Cloud Computing Platform and Japan's NII Cloud Computing Platform. A live demonstration of interoperability between NASA Nebula and the NII's Cloud took place at the NII annual Open House event in Tokyo, Japan yesterday. The Nebula and NII Cloud infrastructures jointly served publicly-available selections of Mars Orbiter data sets to a web application, a first step in NASA's efforts to demonstrate how cloud standards can facilitate interoperability and data portability for the benefit of the international science community.
"By demonstrating how cloud interoperability can facilitate international collaboration and seamless global access to public data, NASA hopes to accelerate the development of cloud standards and the adoption of cloud infrastructure services by the scientific community," said Chris C. Kemp, NASA's Chief Technology Officer for Information Technology.
NASA Nebula and NII's Cloud are built entirely of open-source components and both employ open-data application programming interfaces. NASA and NII will collaborate on open source reference implementations of interoperable cloud services.
"The interoperability between an NII Cloud and the NASA Nebula Cloud is a combined effort toward the creation of an International academic-information infrastructure, which is essential in promoting the global cooperation of research and education," said Masao Sakauchi, NII's director general. "The interoperability of this cloud infrastructure will make it possible to create new academic activities by enabling the software and content to be shared amongst researchers, faculties, and students worldwide."
NASA Nebula is a Cloud Computing service developed by the agency's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., that provides high performance computing, network, and data storage services to NASA scientists and researchers. Nebula allows NASA to share and process large scientific data sets and was one of three flagship projects highlighted in NASA's Open Government Directive.
Japan's NII Cloud provides cloud platform services to Japan's academic and research community. Like Nebula, the NII cloud is developed using open source technologies. By focusing on partnerships and other joint efforts with universities and research institutions throughout Japan, as well as industries and civilian organizations, NII creates state-of-the-art information infrastructure to support education within Japan's broader academic and research community.

Nokia Debuts Nokia Bicycle Charger Kit
Nokia announced the Nokia Bicycle Charger Kit, consisting of a charger and dynamo, as well as a holder to secure the phone to a bike. When the kit is installed, the dynamo - a small electrical generator - uses the movement of the wheels to charge the handset through the standard 2mm charging jack used in most Nokia mobile phones.
"You must look at a number of things when it comes to power management - such as ensuring the phone's operating system is as power-efficient as possible. Now, with our innovative bike charger, people get even more freedom to use their Nokia without worrying about battery life. Bicycles are the most widespread means of transport in many markets around the world, so this is just one more benefit to be gained from an activity people are already doing. This is a great solution to a real challenge, whether people will use it due to limited access to electricity, or to be more environmentally responsible," said Alex Lambeek, Vice President at Nokia.
The kit will be available before the end of the year in selected retailers and Nokia online.

Opera Mini iPhone User Numbers Surge
More than 2.6 million people used Opera Mini on their iPhones, in the two weeks following April’s mid-month launch. This surge in new Opera Mini users reshaped both the top 10 countries and the top handsets for mobile Web usage, according to Opera’s State of the Mobile Web Report, issued today. The United States jumped two spots in the top 10 country ranking, displacing South Africa and Nigeria. Globally, the iPhone immediately became the third-most-popular device for Opera Mini users worldwide.
“While many iconic smartphones are superb web-browsing tools, today it is possible to make nearly every phone capable of browsing the Web gracefully,” said Jon von Tetzchner, Co-founder, Opera Software. “Because the number of mobile-web users will eventually dwarf wireline users, making the Web works flawlessly only on a handful of mobile devices is to turn our collective backs on more than a billion new users. We believe access to the Web is a universal right, and as more companies embrace developing sites for the wide spectrum of mobile-web users, we will come closer to that goal than ever before.”

Microsoft Announces Availability of Hohm Scores for 60 Million Homes in the United States
Microsoft announced the availability of the Hohm Score, an estimate of a home’s energy efficiency, offered as part of the company’s free online home energy management tool, Microsoft Hohm. By simply typing in an address at www.microsoft-hohm.com, anyone can see the Hohm Score for almost any home in the United States.
"The Hohm Score provides an easy way for anyone to measure their home energy efficiency, and compare it with others. It’s important to note that the average Hohm Score here in the U.S. is a failing grade," said Troy Batterberry, product unit manager of Microsoft Hohm. "Fortunately, by making some simple changes to your household, consumers can easily achieve a passing mark, and save an estimated tens of billions of dollars each and every year."
Hohm Scores are calculated by comparing a home’s actual and potential energy efficiency, and is grounded with advanced analytics licensed from Lawrence Berkeley National Labs and statistical data from the Department of Energy. In addition to individual scores, Hohm Scores are available by ZIP code, city and state so anyone can compare a home’s score with others around the country. The national average Hohm Score comes in at 61, with Hawaii topping the list as having the highest average Hohm Score and with Texas coming in last. Space Shuttle Atlantis Returns Home After Its Final Planned Mission
Space shuttle Atlantis and six astronauts ended a 12-day journey of more than 4.8 million miles with an 8:48 a.m. EDT landing Wednesday at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The third of five shuttle missions planned for 2010, this was the last scheduled flight for Atlantis. The mission, designated STS-132, delivered the Russian-built Mini Research Module-1 to the International Space Station. Also known as Rassvet ("dawn" in Russian), the module provides additional storage space and a new docking port for Russian Soyuz and Progress spacecraft. The mission's three spacewalks focused on replacing and installing components outside the station, including replacing six batteries, installing a communications antenna and adding parts to the Canadian Dextre robotic arm.
With Atlantis safely home, shuttle Discovery is scheduled to lift off on its STS-133 mission, in September 2010. Discovery's flight will deliver the Leonardo Permanent Multipurpose Module to house experiments. STS-133 also will bring critical spare components and a cargo carrier to the station. Robonaut 2, or R2, will be the first human-like robot in space when it flies on Discovery to become a permanent resident of the station.

Walmart Lowers iPhone Price
Walmart is now selling the 16GB iPhone 3GS for $97. The lower price, however, is based on a new line activation, or eligible upgrade, with a 2-year contract. With this year's Apple Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) just weeks away, could the lower price of the 3GS be designed to clear the shelves of current iPhone models, making way for the widely expected announcement of the latest generation iPhone? It seems likely, but for those who simply can't wait to get their hands on an iPhone, are looking to add a second line, or don't care that there will most likely be an announcement of a newer model with more features, $97 is a hard price to beat. For those who are still on the fence, though, waiting for the June 7th WWDC keynote may be a better choice.

Netflix to Use Microsoft PlayReady as Its Primary DRM Technology
Microsoft and Netflix announced that Netflix has selected Microsoft PlayReady technology and the Protected Interoperable File Format (PIFF) for use in new Netflix ready devices and applications. This adoption will enable Netflix members to instantly watch thousands of TV episodes and movies over the Internet on a wide range of new devices, including Internet TVs, Blu-ray disc players, home theater systems, video game consoles and other devices from a number of consumer electronics manufacturers. The company expects the first Netflix ready devices aside from computers to incorporate Microsoft PlayReady as early as this summer.
“Netflix ready devices are a popular way for our members to instantly watch the huge library of TV episodes and movies available from Netflix that can be watched instantly on their TVs,” said Bill Holmes, vice president of business development at Netflix. “Netflix is expanding our investment in PlayReady and making PlayReady our primary DRM technology because it best meets the requirements of our content suppliers and device partners while allowing us to benefit from efficiencies in our content delivery infrastructure.”
“Microsoft and Netflix have worked closely on the technologies enabling Netflix members to instantly watch movies — including PlayReady and Silverlight — since the initial planning of instant streaming from Netflix,” said Andreas Mueller-Schubert, general manager of the Media Platforms Business at Microsoft. “By working with Netflix on this broader support for Microsoft PlayReady and PIFF, more people — using more devices — will enjoy the immediacy and choice that the pioneering service of Netflix delivers.”
Yahoo Acquires Koprol
Yahoo announced the acquisition of Koprol, which is headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia. Koprol enables users to interact and share knowledge about their community in a way that is uniquely tailored to mobile phones. Time Warner Inc. and Verizon to Launch Online TV Content
Time Warner Inc. and Verizon announced that the companies are making new television programming available online to Verizon's FiOS TV customers. Beginning in June, FiOS TV customers will automatically receive free, unlimited online access to popular content from Time Warner's Turner networks - TNT and TBS - with plans to bring the same content to mobile devices in the near future. Verizon is working with a number of content providers to test and make available soon to FiOS customers a significant amount of additional online programming from a variety of content providers, including FOX News, CBS, MTV Networks, Hallmark Channel, Smithsonian Channel, the Tennis Channel and more. These channels will join other online video services already available to FiOS customers. These services include Time Warner's HBO, which launched HBO Go to FiOS customers in February.
"Consumers want to access video any time, any place, and Verizon continues to expand our high-quality entertainment services, providing FiOS customers with access and control," said Mike Ritter, chief marketing officer for Verizon. "We will continue to work with companies like Time Warner and other early adopters to remain a leader in delivering the best content over the best network."
Time Warner Inc. Chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes said, "Verizon has been a great partner as we've explored new ways for their subscribers to access and interact with our popular networks. TNT and TBS will now be available online to FiOS subscribers at no added cost. In less than a year, we've been able to launch our vision of delivering TV Everywhere to nearly 20 million customers nationwide."
Once the new Turner content launches for FiOS subscribers, programs will be available free of charge within 24 hours after an episode airs on live television, and will be available with HD video quality. Turner expects to launch additional networks during the remainder of the year. FiOS customers will be able to access the online programming at either www.verizon.com/fiostvonline or soon-to-be launched TNT and TBS websites.

Sony Introduces Interchangeable Lens Digital Cameras
Sony introduced two compact interchangeable lens digital cameras that provide the quality of a digital SLR in a compact body, the NEX-5 and NEX-3. The new camera models are the world's first interchangeable lens cameras with an APS-C sensor to continuously adjust focus and exposure while recording video. The NEX-5 camera offers Full HD movie capture (1080i AVCHD and 720p MP4) with Full HD 60i recording.
"Consumers want better picture quality in a smaller form factor. Sony has made that a reality with these cameras. Both models will be ready for 3D Sweep Panorama this July (with a firmware update).

Both cameras are also supplied with a clip-on flash that attaches via the smart accessory terminal when needed. The new cameras accept both Memory Stick PRO Duo and SD (including both SDHC and SDXC formats) media.

NASA Enables Students To Launch Virtual Space Shuttle
NASA is offering a new computer simulation program to students and educators, which will allow them to take on the roles of NASA engineers and launch a virtual space shuttle from their classrooms. The program is based on software used for training at the shuttle Launch Control Center at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Kennedy Launch Academy Simulation System (KLASS) gives students the chance to monitor important shuttle systems during a launch countdown and decide whether they are "go" for liftoff. Students work together as a team, and learn about the different responsibilities behind-the-scenes of a shuttle launch. KLASS was designed for 6th-grade - 10th-grade students to develop their science, technology, engineering and math skills.
In addition to the launch simulation software, KLASS is offering 40 hours of lesson plans and interactive resources for teachers. The materials can be used for one-day lessons or one-year curriculums. For more information about NASA's education programs, visit: www.nasa.gov/education. Could Antitrust Woes Be Coming for Apple?
Apple's stance on not allowing third-party software to be used by developers to create programs for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad could do the company more harm than good, by setting the stage for a possible antitrust investigation. The change in policy, which was announced in April, not only seemed to be taking a direct swipe at Adobe's Flash, which launched a new version of the software that allowed developers to develop for the Apple platform, but the new rules also affected a number of other third-party tools that could be used to develop for the platform as well. With time and budget concerns to be mulled, Apple's decision has left many in the development community now having to decide whether to develop solely for the iPhone OS platform, using only Apple's tools, or developing for multiple devices, using other development products of their choosing.
Taking the choice from developers to be able to develop with the tools they prefer, as well as having to choose whether to develop products only for the iPhone OS or multiple platforms, has become a problem. Many saw the move right away as having all of the ingredients for sparking an antitrust investigation, and reports are now surfacing that the building blocks are being put into place to support that. Although Steve Jobs explained Apple's position on Flash, and why the company has made the decisions it has, the threat still looms. Though no official announcement has been made yet of an investigation, it remains to be seen if Apple will reconsider its position at this stage, rather than wait until an official investigation is brought about. Stay tuned...

Apple Sells 1 Million iPads in First Month
Apple has sold 1 million iPads since the device launched on April 3rd. The news came as the new iPad with Wi-Fi and 3G made its debut this past Friday.

Due to the growing popularity of the device in the U.S. Apple had previously announced that it would be delaying the international launch of the product, but the company plans to begin taking pre-orders for international customers on May 10th.
