Third-Generation Kindle the Bestselling Product at Amazon

Third-Generation Kindle the Bestselling Product at Amazon
Amazon announced that the third-generation Kindle is now the bestselling product in Amazon's history, passing "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)." Further, on the company's peak day, November 29th, customers ordered more than 13.7 million items worldwide across all product categories, amounting to 158 items per second.

"We're grateful to the millions of customers who have made the all-new Kindle the bestselling product in the history of Amazon -- surpassing Harry Potter 7," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com founder and CEO. "We're seeing that many of the people who are buying Kindles also own an LCD tablet. Customers report using their LCD tablets for games, movies, and web browsing and their Kindles for reading sessions. They report preferring Kindle for reading because it weighs less, eliminates battery anxiety with its month-long battery life, and has the advanced paper-like Pearl e-ink display that reduces eye-strain, doesn't interfere with sleep patterns at bedtime, and works outside in direct sunlight, an important consideration especially for vacation reading. Kindle's $139 price point is a key factor -- it's low enough that people don't have to choose."

The company also announced that on Christmas Day, more people turned on new Kindles for the first time, downloaded more Kindle Buy Once, Read Everywhere apps, and purchased more Kindle books than on any other day in history.

SpaceX Makes History

SpaceX Makes History
SpaceX, the private developer of a family of cost reducing launch vehicles and spacecraft, became the first commercial company in history to re-enter a spacecraft from low-Earth orbit. Until now, the feat has only been performed by six nations or government agencies: the United States, Russia, China, Japan, India, and the European Space Agency.

After being launched into low-Earth orbit atop a Falcon 9 rocket, the Dragon spacecraft orbited the Earth at speeds greater than 17,000 miles per hour, reentered the Earth’s atmosphere, and landed in the Pacific Ocean. The successful flight and recovery of the spacecraft is also the first to be done under NASA’s COTS program to develop commercial supply services to the International Space Station.

Once the Space Shuttle retires, SpaceX will fly at least 12 missions to carry cargo to and from the International Space Station as part of the Commercial Resupply Services contract for NASA. The Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft designers, however, have no plans of stopping there. The Falcon 9 and Dragon were designed to carry astronauts, not just cargo, and the team at SpaceX will be working hard to one day reach that goal.

Virginia Tech Researchers Explore Promising New Cancer Treatment
Virginia Tech Researchers showed off magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) during a presentation at Fluid Dynamics in Long Beach, CA, a promising new cancer treatment that essentially "fries" cells inside tumors. The procedure has been used successfully in prostate, liver, and breast tumors by injecting magnetic nanoparticles into the body intravenously and letting them diffuse selectively into cancerous tissues. When a high-frequency magnetic field is introduced, the particles heat up, raising the temperature of the tumor cells.

"The entire tumor volume is heated above a threshold treatment temperature (typically 42 degrees Celsius or 107.6 degrees Fahrenheit) for generally 30 minutes," explained engineering graduate student Monrudee Liangruksa of Virginia Tech.

When the nanoparticles are heated, cancer cells die with no adverse effects to the surrounding healthy tissue. To further perfect the technique, Liangruksa and her colleagues explored the effects of different types of magnetic nanoparticles. The most promising varieties, they found, were iron–platinum, magnetite, and maghemite, all of which generate therapeutically useful heating. Magnetite and maghemite, however, are the most biocompatible agents for use in humans, as iron-platinum is toxic.

The new streaming-only plan is available now to both new and existing members.

Amazon.com Launches Amazon Studios

Amazon.com Launches Amazon Studios
Amazon launched Amazon Studios, a new online business that invites filmmakers and screenwriters around the world to submit full-length movies and scripts to make money, get discovered, and get their movie made. Through the monthly and annual Amazon Studios Awards, Amazon Studios will offer a total of $2.7 million to the top submissions received by Dec. 31, 2011, and will seek to develop the top Amazon Studio projects as commercial feature films under its first-look deal with Warner Bros. Pictures.

Writers and filmmakers are being invited to add full-length scripts and test movies to Amazon Studios, with test movies required to be more than 70 minutes in length.

"We are excited to introduce writers, filmmakers and movie lovers to Amazon Studios," said Roy Price, Director of Digital Product Development. "Full-length test movies will show stories up on their feet and attract helpful feedback at an early stage. We hope that Amazon Studios will help filmmakers experiment and collaborate and we look forward to developing hit movies."

The company stated that the goal of Amazon Studios is to produce new, full-budget theatrical films based on the best projects, and it will give Warner Bros. Pictures first access to the projects Amazon Studios wishes to produce in cooperation with an outside studio. Under the Amazon Studios development agreement, if a filmmaker or screenwriter creates a project with an original script and it is released by Amazon Studios as a theatrical feature film, the submitter will receive a rights payment of $200,000, and if the movie makes over $60 million at the U.S. box office, the original filmmaker or screenwriter will receive a $400,000 bonus. If Warner Bros. Pictures passes on a particular project, Amazon Studios can then produce the project in cooperation with another studio.

Screenplays and full-length test movies will be selected on the basis of commercial viability, including story, character, dialogue, emotion and other elements. In the 2011 Annual Awards, Amazon Studios will award $100,000 to the best script and $1 million to the best movie submitted by December 31, 2011. To be eligible for the first monthly awards, test movies and scripts must be uploaded by January 31, 2011. Winners for the first monthly awards will be announced near the end of February 2011 - $100,000 for the best full-length test movie and $20,000 each for the two best scripts. The rights payments associated with releasing a full-budget commercial film are separate from and come on top of any money awarded to top submissions through the monthly and annual Amazon Studios Awards. FOX Blocks Google TV

FOX Blocks Google TV
The FOX television network has joined ABC, NBC, and CBS in blocking Google TV from being able to access full episodes of shows from the Google TV Web browser. The move affects only the Web browser of Google TV devices such as set top boxes and televisions that incorporate the Google TV platform. PC Web browsers are not affected. With the major networks blocking content just as Google TV tries to establish itself in the marketplace, many believe the lack of content could hurt the adoption of Google TV by consumers. With alternative devices such as the Apple TV and Roku boxes widely available for a much lower price, Google TV will need to quickly solve these issues if it hopes to beat its competitors. Stay tuned...

Apple Delays White iPhone 4 Again

Apple Delays White iPhone 4 Again
Apple has delayed the release of the white iPhone 4 again, reportedly stating that it will be available this Spring. The elusive white model has been plagued with delays since its announcement back in June, with reports of manufacturing issues being the cause. The manufacturing issues had reportedly been cleared up, leaving many to wonder if a problem with the camera is the new cause for the delay. Reports are stating that light being able to enter the iPhone 4's white case is causing issues with the camera not being able to take photographs properly. Light leaking out of the case was cited as a reason for an earlier delay of the device, so could light leaking back in also be a problem? Whatever the cause for the delay, the next version of the iPhone (expected to be announced in or around June) will no doubt resolve a number of issues the iPhone 4 has suffered since its release. Perhaps by then the white iPhone, or a new design of the version previously shown, will appear. Stay tuned...

Verizon Field Test of 10Gbps Two-Way Speed Over Existing FiOS Network Fiber Successful

Verizon Field Test of 10Gbps Two-Way Speed Over Existing FiOS Network Fiber Successful
Verizon successfully completed a field trial of an advanced fiber-optic transmission technology, known as XG-PON2, which is capable of delivering a 10Gbps (gigabits per second) broadband connection both downstream and upstream. The trial was conducted at a business in Taunton, Mass., and used the same optical fiber that provides that business with its existing FiOS network connection. Upstream speeds achieved in the test were eight times faster than those provided by the standard GPON, or gigabit passive optical network, technology.

"This trial demonstrates the capacity of Verizon's FiOS network to provide even greater upstream bandwidth capabilities required for adoption on a mass scale of new and emerging residential applications like user-generated video, as well as business services," said Brian Whitton, executive director of technology for Verizon. "High-definition video sharing, 3-D video, video telephony, telemedicine, and offsite backups and storage services are just a few of the applications that will take advantage of the expanded capacity Verizon is demonstrating today."

The tests demonstrated an application layer throughput of 9.1Gbps, upstream and downstream. As part of the test, a 2.3 gigabyte movie took an average of just four seconds to download or upload and save. The download and upload speeds are close to 60 times faster than the maximum speeds capable with cable's DOCSIS 3.0 technology and more than twenty thousand times faster than the average cable subscriber would experience.

Sony to Cut PSPgo Prices

Sony to Cut PSPgo Prices
Sony will be cutting the price of its PSPgo portable gaming devices this month. According to reports, the units will be discounted in both the U.S. and Japan. The current PSPgo, which sells for $249, will be reduced to $199, just in time for the upcoming holiday shopping season. Sony's PSP and PSPgo have been feeling the heat from other handheld gaming platfoms, such as the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. No doubt the company is hoping the reduced price will bring gamers back to the PSP and PSPgo, and give them a bigger piece of the pie this holiday.

E-books More Likely to Keep Children Reading

E-books More Likely to Keep Children Reading
A new study commissioned by Scholastic reportedly shows that children who read e-books are more likely to develop an interest in reading for fun. Although some parents are concerned that new reading technologies may cause distractions for their children, the majority of children polled stated that they are interested in e-book readers, such as Amazon's Kindle. Additionally, approximately one third of children also stated that if e-books were made available to them, they would have more interest in reading for fun.

With e-reader technology continuing to evolve, and grow in popularity, whether a child prefers e-books over printed books, or printed books over e-books, should not be an issue. A child showing any interest in reading books for fun should be encouraged, regardless of what format the book is in. What are your feelings on this subject? Let us know on Twitter or Facebook

Vattenfall, one of the leading European energy companies, officially opened the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Thanet Offshore Wind Farm, off England’s southeast coast. The wind farm has 100 turbines and will generate electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of over 200,000 British households.

Wind power will be a corner-stone of delivering both profitability and sustainability for Vattenfall in the years to come,” said Řystein Lřseth, CEO and President of Vattenfall. “This project would not have been possible without the British Government’s active support and its commitment to renewable energy.”

The construction of the 300 MW Thanet Offshore Wind Farm has taken just over two years, and the wind farm is expected to operate for at least 25 years. At 300MW, it is the largest offshore wind farm in the world. Each turbine is up to 115 meters tall at its highest point. The wind farm covers an area of 35 square kilometers.

“This groundbreaking commercial offering creates tremendous opportunities for residents and businesses in the region.” said Harold DePriest, President and CEO of EPB. “With access to the fastest broadband speeds in the United States, Chattanooga represents the next frontier in communications technology, with limitless potential for new applications for education, entertainment, health care, industrial development and more.”

With EPB and Alcatel-Lucent’s announcement of 1 Gigabit service, Chattanooga is now 10 times faster and 10 years ahead of the FCC’s National Broadband Plan calling for 100 Mbps speeds for 260 million households nationwide by 2020. The new service will reportedly cost $350 a month.

EPIX and Netflix Announce Streaming Movie Deal

EPIX and Netflix Announce Streaming Movie Deal
EPIX and Netflix announced an agreement through which Netflix members can instantly watch new releases and library titles from EPIX streamed over the Internet from Netflix. Though EPIX will make movies available to Netflix, new releases will not show up on Netflix until 90 days after their premium pay TV and subscription on demand debuts. The agreement, however, adds many popular movie titles from major studios to Netflix's streaming catalog, and will help to grow the library of movies and TV shows that can be watched instantly on the service.

"Adding EPIX to our growing library of streaming content, as the exclusive Internet-only distributor of this great content, marks the continued emergence of Netflix as a leader in entertainment delivered over the Web,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. "The EPIX deal is an example of the innovative ways in which we’re partnering with major content providers to broaden the scope and freshness of choices available to our members to watch instantly over the Internet.”

Mark Greenberg, president of EPIX, added: “Netflix is an incredibly popular service and we welcome them as our newest distribution partner. We are pleased to be able to continue our mission of bringing consumers the movies where they want to watch them, while satisfying the differing needs of cable, telco and satellite operators. This deal also underscores the tremendous value of our offerings in the marketplace.”

Movies from the multi-year deal will begin streaming from Netflix on September 1st, and include movies from Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM.

Saudi Arabia Allows BlackBerry Service to Continue

Saudi Arabia Allows BlackBerry Service to Continue
After threatening to ban BlackBerry services due to security issues, Saudi Arabia has reportedly reconsidered its stance after BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) made efforts to address their concerns. How long continuation of BlackBerry services will remain in effect will most likely depend on how quickly RIM is able to fix the security concerns of the government, which include not being able to have access to the encrypted information passing in and out of the country. The reprieve, however, is good news to the large BlackBerry community in Saudi Arabia that would have been affected by the problem, as well as visitors to the country.

United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia Crack Down on BlackBerry Service
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia are planning to freeze BlackBerry Messenger, BlackBerry e-mail, and BlackBerry Web browser services unless a fix is put in place to allow encrypted data that is sent from the devices to be tracked locally. Currently, the data cannot be tracked locally, which has become a security concern. Millions of subscribers who would be affected by the freeze have already voiced their concerns, and those planning on visiting the region are being warned that the decision will affect them as well. Saudi Arabia is expected to freeze services as soon as this month, while the UAE is expected to wait until October. The freeze, once put in place, will remain until Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry, provides a solution to fix the problem.
