Apple Acquires Motion Capture Company Faceshift


Apple has reportedly acquired Faceshift, a motion capture company that worked on the latest Star Wars film. Though Apple has remained quiet about the acquisition and its plans for the company’s tech, Faceshift allows for the ability to capture a person’s facial expressions on a digital character in real-time, without the need for the small markers traditionally used to map a subject’s face and provide reference points.

Speculation about Apple’s intended uses for Faceshift’s technology has run from putting it to use in gaming applications, to avatars in virtual reality environments, to mood recgonition, vehicle applications, and more. At this point, however, the speculation remains just that. We’ll have to wait to see how Apple and Faceshift come together on projects, and what they will create by doing that. Stay tuned…
